Career opportunities in Fund Transfer Pricing

Dear forum,

I studied law as well as economics and am currently working for a renowned major law firm in tax consultancy for financial transactions and clients from the financial industry, more precisely in the area of transfer pricing.

I have now received an offer from a federal state bank (approx. EUR 100 billion in total assets) to start working in treasury, specialising in fund transfer pricing. This raises the following key questions for me:

  • To what extent does such a job represent a good entry into the financial industry and what career opportunities does it actually offer?
  • How is the professional experience of federal state banks assessed by private banks?  I happened to read in an article that in the past they were also known as "stuffing goose banks" because they swallowed all kinds of junk.

Thank you for your answers.

Hey there!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, a job in fund transfer pricing can indeed be a good entry into the financial industry. It's a specialized field that deals with how funds are transferred within an organization, and it's a crucial part of ensuring that a company's financial operations are running smoothly.

As for development opportunities, they can be quite varied. You could potentially move into a more senior role within treasury, or leverage your experience in fund transfer pricing to move into other areas of finance. It's also worth noting that the skills you'd gain in this role - such as understanding how funds flow within an organization and how to price these transfers - are highly transferable and could be valuable in a range of finance roles.

Regarding your second question, the professional experience of federal state banks can be quite valuable. While it's true that some may have a reputation for being less selective in their investments, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It means that you'd likely get exposure to a wide range of financial transactions and scenarios, which could be a great learning experience.

However, it's also worth noting that the reputation of federal state banks can vary, and it's important to do your research on the specific bank you're considering.

Remember, every monkey can climb a tree, but not every monkey can manage the jungle's treasury! So, it's a unique opportunity you have there. Good luck!
