Gap year work in UK
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this - I'm new here.
I'm currently in the last year of sixth form, and have offers from UCL and Durham (still waiting for LSE, Warwick, and HYP across the pond), but I intend to take a gap year and re-apply to university if I don't get an offer from HYP.
I want to work in IB after university, and then maybe PE or some such, but I obviously don't know much yet, so it's all speculation. Regardless, I'd like to gain some of the knowledge and skills that are relevant to IB. Do you think this is possible, and where would I look for this?
My grades are pretty good (10 A*s at GCSE, 6 As at AS, predicted all A*s at A-level, 2350 in SAT I, 800 in Math II SATII, that sort of thing), and I think I can handle the challenge intellectually.
By the way, I live in Birmingham, but am open to opportunities in London. I've applied for Rothschild's Gap Year Programme, and am planning on contacting Brewin Dolphin and Clearwater Corporate Finance, both of which have offices in Birmingham.
You don't need a gap year, and I don't know if it'd even help your chances at landing an IB slot. Just head to LSE/UCL (Warwick's a good school too, but being further from the City's probably a tiny bit of a downer) and kill it there, and you'll be set.
Be sure to get a spring week at a notable bank.
I've just realised I didn't properly explain why I wanted to take a gap year, and I've edited the original post to that end. 'Bottom line' is that I'll probably be taking a gap year, and I want to make the most of it. I realise that UCL is a good university and so forth, but I've been working for a long time to go to Oxbridge/HYP, and I'll not give up that easily - if nothing else, it's an indulgence.
