How to get VP or higher role in IB from MBA

Going to MBA M7-like school (basically ranked higher than some m7s) from Strategy Consulting (think top boutique or the McKinsey of strategic transformation consulting for SMB businesses) and want to do IB but don’t really want to grind it out - I have 5 YOE already and I’ve been in the trenches

I’d say my best quality is my can do positive attitude and managing others. I would say I’m a business leader with executive presence vs a lowly analyst / associate who just does work above them. I think I’m better at leading others and managing.

Is there a way to swing MBA recruiting to hire me as a VP or higher, or is there any associate programs geared to focus more on management and high level strategy? I’m not keen on doing the actual work and I guess I can just manage the analysts beneath me but I’d rather come in higher and have an associate check the analyst work for me and deliver ready to output work. My strength is more in management and leading others vs just being a doer.

 

Unlikely - your second paragraph isn't very encouraging on how you'd run your teams. Sounds like you should go back to consulting

A VP should know how to run a process, answer detailed questions from the Asc or An about modeling or structure detail, and also how to create materials when it is crunch time. You likely won't have these skills without doing an Asc stint. I've seen MBAs 1st yr Asc with multiple YOE like you.

Lol no - unless u go to some tier 3 boutique. In a bull market like 2021, maybe you find someone to gift you with a Senior Associate title but in this market you should just take the Associate/Sr. Associate title, grind it out, prove that you have the chops to manage in 9-12 months and then push for a VP title in another 12-18 months. If you're as gifted as you think you are, you should be thinking in terms of 5-8 year time horizon for an expedited path to VP-->D every 2 years and then go from there.

 

Don't mean this to be a dick but you are the definition of the VP that would know nothing and all junior-level employees hate you cause you don't know the actual technical of the job besides telling others what to do and the analyst and associate that have been through the trenches would know way more of the technical aspect of the job. You could start as an associate after MBA, take it or leave it.

 

The OP must be trolling, or is remarkably unaware of what the investment banking industry is like.  I also want to be paid $500,000 to have other people do all of my work for me.  And if they ask me for help, I'll tell them to fuck off and figure it out, because I never had to do their job.  I'm just their manager, after all.

If you want to become an investment banker without having to do any of the grunt work, then you better be an extremely well connected, 50-year old businessman who can bring in multimillion-dollar client relationships on day 1.

"My strength is more in management and leading others vs just being a doer" - sounds like you don't want to do the job at all.  An investment bank isn't going to hire you because you say you are a good manager.  They are going to hire you because they trust you to produce quality financial analysis and/or you can bring deal revenue to the bank.

You cannot possibly think this role exists. Has to be a troll. If not, you’re in for a rude awakening. If you choose to do IB, you will be an associate, no chance of going directly to VP at any reputable firm. As an associate, you will be consistently humbled by the second year analyst you’re working with, and will slowly but surely figure out what is needed to be good. After a couple of years working with the same senior bankers, and putting your time in, you will be ready for VP. Just because you “PUt yOuR TiME in” already, that was in a different industry and not applicable. So much of the job is just creating work your senior will sign off on, which is something that just takes time to figure out
