Internship dilemma - DIFC
I would appreciate some advice on my dilemma. I have not gotten any IB internship and was pretty dissapointed about that as I will be graduating next year and hope to get into IB afterwards. Now I have been offered an opportunity to do an internship at the Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC). However, they are being very opaque about what I would actually be doing, so I am a bit concerned that I might end up with non-sense work for 10 weeks.
How do you think would an internship at the DIFC be perceived when I apply for jobs?
Considering that my other alternative would be to do an internship that is completely unrelated to finance, would it be better to just take the DIFC internship regardless of what I would be doing there?
Any constructive advice is appreciated.
DIFC lets you pick which sector you want to focus on - so I'm assuming you would pick banking and finance. The name carries some weight and is also in the Gate Building, which houses other companies such as UBS, Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch, EFG Hermes, etc. You never know who you might run into - references are big in Dubai. It seems as though the internship is one where it is what you make of it. In essence, you could end up doing nothing or learning a lot, depends on you. Although the work will not really prepare you for a job in banking, it will definitely make you more familiar with the industry (terms, practices, etc). Obviously if you have nothing else, take it. If you haven't yet, I would look into places like EFG. Look a step lower at places like Deloitte FAS (I know for a fact they are hiring for FAS in Emaar Business Park).
Hope this helps and take any advice with a grain of salt because I do not know Dubai very well.
Phantombanker, thanks for the advice. I suppose I will take it if I have nothing else, and yes, it might be a good opportunity in the end. I know Dubai (but haven't worked there), so I do like it there. However, now I just got a potential internship opportunity in Singapore...connections seem to be working out for me this week....so in that case I would be a bit conflicted on what I should take! I guess I should look on the upside, last week I was considering to just take up a language in the summer because I had nothing else....
