Leaving a job after just a month…
What are people’s positions on empty promises in the workplace? I have a part-time PWM job, 2-days a week whilst I study. This is also on a 2-year contract with the practice.
However, a much greater opportunity has presented itself to me and ideally I will jump ship and take it. The only problem is that I have only worked this part-time role for a little over a month. I have built up some good rapport quickly with some of the workers.
How questionable, specifically from an ethical sense, is my sudden resignation? I am certain that I have better prospects at this new opportunity but I do not want to go about this the wrong way.
Should I even be thinking twice??
You should take the better opportunity.
I speak as someone who now hires people for my team: I don’t hold it against people who jump to better opps. At the end of the day, why keep someone on payroll when they are mentally checked out? It’s not good for them or for me.
Or maybe I’m just more open to this stuff as a millennial manager. I used to follow the “stay at your job for a minimum of 1 year” rule that my Gen X bosses gave me…but then I realized these old farts don’t follow that rule themselves (they jump to a competing shop and lateral as a MD/Partner at the first sign of good opportunity and won’t care one bit about you).
Long story short, the Great Resignation has largely normalized rapid turnover like the kind you are describing. There is zero shame in jumping.
