Need Advice for Summer Internship

I'm currently a sophomore at a non-target Midwestern school.

Currently, I'm applying and looking to apply for the many finance internships being offered locally & regionally for the summer. The ones I'm specifically looking at are the big-name aviation/aircraft companies and some data software companies. Both of these have finance and analyst type internships.
Would this type of internship help set me up for an SA position the next summer?

If my future plan after graduation (2018) is to hopefully either get into PWA, PE, or IB, should I stick with trying to cold-call/email the local PWM, PE, or IB firms in my area to see if they're willing to get an intern on their team. I don't mind being unpaid for the internship at the firm if I'm offered a position, because I'm looking to gain knowledge and expertise into the industry that I'm hopefully going into the future.

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated for this monkey!

TL;DR - Sophomore from non-target. Should I take an finance/analyst internship position with big-name aircraft or data software companies in my area OR try and get a local internship at a PWM, PE, or IB firm?

I would strongly recommend that you get the most relevant experience that you can. If your goal is private wealth, PE, or IB, look to get a job in those fields. The work you do there will be tremendously different than a job in a corporate finance group. While the name of the aviation company might be more prestigious, the relevant experience will go much further when you are going through the interview process with larger organization as you try to acquire a full-time job.
