Questions to ask during follow-up phone conversation

What are good questions to ask in a phone conversation with your contact at an IBank/PE-Fund?
I'm applying in Europe, and it is common here to call the company after reading the job ad and before sending your application.
So what are good questions to ask? (I mean questions that show real interest, not things like "how many employees...?", "what business division...?")
Thx a lot guys

What level person would you be speaking with? Is it someone who really knows that business, or a junior HR staffer who can only answer a narrow set of specific questions about the job and application?

I'd ask questions that will help you understand best how to position yourself in your application and interview. - how is this firm/fund positioned vs other similar companies (make sure you have done your homework so you don't come across like you haven't done the basic research yourself). What's different in terms of the areas that are experienced the greatest growth, what's the culture like - more details on the specific skills that are important to being successful in this job. - what are the key deliverables for a person in this position

You can't ask some of the kinds of questions you'd ask an insider who's not involved in the hiring process, but try to scratch a bit deeper so you can position yourself best. Also, if the person you're speaking to could be influential in determining if you'll get an interview, try to sell yourself a bit as well. Tell them you're very excited about the position, and specifically about the firm for reason A, B, and C.

It depends on who you are talking to within the division - whether it is an analyst/associate - junior banker, or a VP, D, MD - senior resource. Many of the general questions will be the same, but some of the daily task questions, and how they broke in will be more applicable to junior guys, while market tendencies, whether their group is a group about to explode would be more applicable to senior bankers (if for no other reason than senior bankers might like to talk about it more than junior guys would as they are trying to get in a quick convo to help you out and get home before 2am). Check this out if you have more questions on working the informational phone call - http://www.bankonbanking.com/2009/08/25/effectively-working-the-informa… and let me know if you have any other questions.

In general, you want to stay away from the questions you can easily find out by looking through their web site - what groups does the bank offer, how many employees, where are you - general bank questions. Focus more on the specific contact - how they got in, their path, what they felt worked/didn't work, advice they have for someone trying to get in from your path, why they got into the field, etc.
