Too late to apply for summer 2021 IB internships (upcoming sophomore)?

I will be a sophomore in the fall at a target school and am regretting not thinking about applying for an internship for summer 2021. I've heard that the junior year internship is what is most important but after looking at the people from my target school going to Goldman, JP Morgan, they all had an investment banking summer internship the summer before junior year, which makes me feel like I am already behind. So, is it too late to apply for IB SA internships summer 2021? If it is, what are other ways I can use next summer to still be competitive for BBs?

Unless you are diversity, it is extremely difficult landing a sophomore IB internship at a BB (combination of limited seats and a majority of programs being diversity only).

Most of the other small boutiques don't have a formal recruiting process so it is mainly dependant on networking. Start reaching out to people and networking but I believe most of them will start hiring people towards the end of fall. And for a rising junior summer internship, the name of the company doesn't matter much at all but the title of being an investment banking summer analyst is really helpful and the couple of bullet points can always be tidied up to look good for the resume.

Thanks for the response! I am looking to apply for the rising junior internships (summer 2021) which is what I'm asking if its too late for. Also, Is there a more efficient way to find application deadlines and open spots for summer 2021 other than googling each individual bank?

Not too late. I didn't apply until mid-july my sophomore summer and got interviews from BBs (one of which I am currently at) and EBs. Definitely less spots to compete for if you're applying late, but by no means out of the question

when you say sophomore summer are you meaning the summer following your freshman year or the summer before your junior year?

Never too late. Don’t know where you’re based, but if apps for your city are closed try to network with alumni or aim for smaller regional offices. APAC recruitment typically starts later than US offices as well and can carry through junior fall. Good luck
