What am I supposed to do?

Hey guys,

I have just recently graduated from Business School and had a very good personal relationship with a big-shot professor who is very reputable and well-connected on the street. By the end of the semester, the professor offered me to send my resume to some of the mutual funds/Asset management firms that he had relationship with and even promised me that I will at least get an interview.

However, after I sent him my resume and two other follow-up emails, voice mail(did not pick up) concerning his offer, unfortunately, he never responded.

I have had a hard time in terms of job searching(can't even get a job interview for over a month) and think my best bet getting a job is through my existing contacts and aggressive networking.I understand that he's a very busy person and helping me out might be on the very back of his mind.

What do you think that I'm supposed to do at this point? do you guys think if I should keep trying to contact the professor or I should just forget about it. If I should keep following up, What should I say in my email or phone call?

Thanks so much

Thanks so much for the responses.

To dayaaam: It has been about over two weeks now.

To banker88: As far as I know this professor, I think he cares much more about how he thinks about me (during classes, dinner together after classes, numerous discussions etc) than what I have on my resume, especially for people at his level. In addition, he know me very well and he knew what my previous experiences are before he offered to pass it around and I'm confident that my resume did not look too crappy.

I think you should wait another week or so, and then reach back out to the professor via a phone call (if no answer, then send an email) to touch base, catch him up on any of your updates, check in to see how he's been, and thank him again for taking a look at your resume and helping to pass it around (by thanking him, you acknowledge that he is helping you, but doesn't put immediate pressure on him to quickly respond - it gives the impression that you are making things happen, and taking the initiative in addition to his help, instead of relying solely on his help). I'm sure it's just a matter of being busy and not a matter of him blatantly ignoring you - it's only been 2 weeks, and, as you said, I'm sure this isn't the only thing on his mind.

To address another point, you definitely need to work your network, and get your name/resume out there. Make sure your resume is top notch, and that you are exploring all avenues. I know it's tough to stay optimistic and focused in this market, but the alternative is not an option if you hope to land a job.

That professor is not a headhunter, why the hell did you put pressure on him like that. That would only annoyed him.

Do you have his home address? Try ringing the doorbell. If he doesn't come out, show him you mean business. Keep constant vigil on his driveway, and if it's absolutely necessary to leave, ask friends to keep watch in alternating 8-hour shifts so that you can go shower, eat, or post on these forums.

When his mail is delivered, hold it ransom. If it comes down to it, you might want to even burn an envelope that looks important on his front lawn. At this point, you have of course crossed the threshold into Federal Offense Land for tampering with mail, so there's nowhere to go but forward.

Form a human circle around the property. Depending on the size of the home, this can take anywhere from 50 to 250 individuals. I hope you've been networking aggressively - it's going to help you out here. Every so often, tighten the circle until you are all pressed up to the house and there is no escape. On your command, your army of occupational deviants should arrange itself into small groups of three or four and begin boosting one another into windows, ventilation shafts, chimneys and through solid wall until penetration into the interior of the residence is achieved.

Once inside, what you do is up to you, but your chain of command had better be taut. The best idea is to get this guy on the phone right then and there with all of his contacts.

Once an interview is arranged - and I can't stress this enough - thank him graciously with a handshake and an offer to dinner. Clean up any mess you may have made and vacate the premises. It's a good idea to get a "Thank You" note out in the mail within the next 24 hours and to follow up in case he has any further concerns about your qualifications.
