Yes, run most days, also have competed in marathons. Surprisingly easy to find areas to run in nyc as long as you don’t mind asphalt/concrete (also lots of running groups). Central Park is obviously a good choice (including the bridle path which gets you off the roads), then you have the path by the fdr and also on the west side. If you like nature then you need to head out of the city, but you can get to Rockefeller state park by public transit (not a good idea right now with covid...).

If you aren’t based in nyc then the above isn’t all that helpful

I consistently plod along for a few miles. I can generally convince myself to do 2-3 miles a few days a week. For a while last year I was running quite a bit - for some reason thought I should scale up to a half marathon quickly.

Problem was I got impatient - started way over stressing my body by running too much, not strength training enough to keep all those ancillary muscles together - then ended up with all kinds of injuries across my back/hips.

Similar situation for me - used to be pretty competitive, then didn't care about it at all for a few years in college, then got back into training for a half marathon way too zealously. 1 year later still dealing with a fucked up tendon from ramping up that training way too quick, and when I have run this year it's never been more than 10 mins at a time... Moral of the story - make sure to ease into it if you haven't run in a while.

Sounds like you might want to get new running shoes. Couple years back, I didn't know that shoes only had 300~500 miles lifespan. I started getting all sorts of injuries. Then they all disappeared when I got a new pair.

Bro same, it’s like my body aged post Covid when it comes to running. Switch to the stairmaster, incline walking, and the occasional sprints 2-3 times a week. I do like a long run only once every other week. I also lift 4 times a week.

Nah

I still run a bit to stay in shape (more into lifting, jiu-jitsu and boxing these days) but used to run a few marathons per year and was obsessed with running for a while. It used to be one of my favorite ways to explore a new city when I was traveling for work or fun. It's also just great that you don't really need anything to do it; you just throw on shoes and go at it.

This. During undergrad we did a trip to the US and visited four cities. I went up early every day to go for a run. The sundawn at Chicago's Lake Michigan and across San Francisco's Russian Hills were the best.

I know it's probably a bit different style than you and the other commenters are doing, but back in university I was a middle-distance track and field athlete (basically just sprinting for a long period of time). Nowadays I just do 10 minutes of HIIT sprints in the morning while fasted and 5 minutes of HIIT sprints after each workout to burn additional fat after my workout burned all the ATP in my body. Anything more and I will begin to prevent myself from building any muscle.

I don't understand how people do marathons and other ridiculously long distance events.... seems like a way to just give up on ever being remotely physically in shape, but to each their own!

There is more than one way to get there. I'd rather have 30 chapters than 3000 pages.

I don’t know why you say marathon running wouldn't get you in overall shape.

At my peak I was running a lot (100 miles per week), lifting 4-5 days a week and could manage reasonable body weights exercises (75-100 pushups at a time usually 4-5 reps per workout, bunch of sit-ups, etc and could almost dunk a basketball at just below 6 ft).

Nothing against long distance running - it just doesn't make sense for those trying to put on muscle (not just increase their total push up count). Any long-form of endurance training will drastically increase your body's cortisol production (decreasing your immune system, inflicing muscle damage and hindering your body's ability to repair muscle tissue after your workouts).

Not everyone wants to be putting on muscle however, some want to be lean so it's different for everyone!

I like HIIT training because its that middle ground that lets you burn fat w/o burning too much muscle, but again, everyone has different goals!

There is more than one way to get there. I'd rather have 30 chapters than 3000 pages.

I'm slow as well right now too. Next triathlon isn't until Sept 2021 (Half Iron) so just have been chilling.

I ran in high school but only did it a little bit in college. This past summer I tried to run between 30 and 40 minutes everyday. Once the weather starts getting cooler, I plan on adding a long run plus one or two workouts to my weekly routine. Other than that, I just do bodyweight strength exercises throughout the day with a little but of plyometrics if I feel like it.

I am not sure what my goals are exactly but being to do a 4:45 mile and a 55 second 400 would be nice. Haven't done that since HS but I think I could get back to that level

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

I'm sure I'll get some MS for this but - Get a bike man. Your knees will thank you in your 40s/50s

Basically every male adult in my life who was a former athlete or at least in shape and/or ran regularly has told me to stop running. They all have at least one fake knee or are about to get one at this point. My dad was a 3-5 day a week runner my entire life growing up and has had both done after having numerous surgeries for tears in his 50's that really didn't do much

Trust me I love running, I did daily as a teen when training for sports and into college. I do for warm ups on a treadmill from time to time which I cant stand (prefer to be outside), but if you're a bigger frame male, your joints just can't take that much pounding especially into your older years

agree - cycling is where its at - Zwift is awesome too if you can get your hands on a smart trainer ...

Runner here. Jersey City waterfront is the best place to run imo. You can take it from the Colgate clock (Wall St) all the way to Weehawken (Central Park). Lots of scenery

Any favorite shoes? My current favorite trainers are the Nike Zoom Fly 3s. I liked the ZF2s as well and have raced in Nike 4% and own a pair of Next% that I was supposed to race a 26.2 in March, but was cancelled.

It would be nice to get a pair of AlphaFlys before my next big road race, but didn't login in time when they were released so hoping they do a 2nd release.

The Saucony Endorphin Pros look pretty cool as a race shoe.

What kind of GPS tracking do you use? I ordered a Garmin 245 Music. I am pumped to be able to run and listen to music without my having my phone with me.

I have a Garmin Fenix 5x plus sapphire - I have had it for over 2 years - one of my best purchases ever. The Fenix 6 is out now and looks a bit sleeker.

Yeah I sync with Spotify on it. I don't usually run with my phone either. I always run with music.

Any ergonomic shoe recommendations?

Try going to a runner store and get properly fitted.

There’s a Runners World where I live at, and it’s an incredible experience.

No pain no game.
