Are the Sixers For Real?

I am a Sixers fan and I have enjoyed watching them get off to a very good start at 6-1.  Their schedule has been very light so far.  The only team they have beaten with an above 500 record is Orlando and they are probably not a very good team.  I do not count NY and Cleveland as being above 500, haha.  With that said there is a chance they are going to be very good this year, as their chemistry under Doc Rivers seems great.  They have an interesting team:

The Starters

Embiid - one of the best centers in basketball when healthy

Simmons - he is a good playmaker, scorer, rebounder who can't shoot.

Harris - A solid all around player

Curry - He first name is not Stephen but the dude can shoot three pointers.  In fact, he has the second highest percentage in NBA history for 3s at about 45%

Green - He is a good defender who can shoot the 3 at about 40%

The bench is not deep

Shake Milton - He is a good player who can do a little of everything.

Howard - The dude is still a force inside.  Last night he had 13 rebounds in 18 minutes.  He has significant limitations, though.

Korkmaz - He is a good shooter but has been hurt this year

Maxey  - He is a rookie who is getting some playing time.  He seems like he has potential but seems a little out of control at times

There is not much to say about the rest of the bench.  In limited playing time, Mathias seems like he can shoot.

I lean towards saying they aren't forreal. However, the Nets project seems to be imploding which gives the Sixers a chance to take the east away from either the Bucks or the Celtics (Heat and Raptors don't look like they will be ECF contenders this year).

wait what??? dude we're less than 10 games into the season...and dont act like KD+Kyrie+insane depth isnt at the very least a ECF contender. sure losing Dinwiddie was problematic but it'd be way over exaggerated to say the whole thing is imploding

I can't believe you forgot Thybulle as a bench player - great defense, but has a tendency to get into foul trouble and very limited on offense. Looks like he has a better handle and touch around the rim from what I've seen so far though. Mike Scott is also worth mentioning. He is currently injured and regressed last year, but he is playable and is actually pretty important as he's really the only forward in the second unit.

To you original point, it's too early to tell. The Sixers went undefeated for I believe 7 or 8 games last year, and we saw how that went. This year's team has better spacing and ball movement, but the fact that they've only beat one team over .500 like you mentioned makes it hard to grasp how they would do against better teams. As a Sixers fan I want to say they can win the East, but I just have not seen enough to be comfortable calling them contenders yet.

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

I forgot about Thybulle.  He is a good defender but he throws up bricks more often than not.  Mike Scott is not very good at this point.  They have an interesting set up in that they have Three starting bigs and two 3 point specialists

I think they are decent if that is what you mean by for real. I think the Heat will turn it around, but Bucks and Celtics are still a step above for me. Also lol at Washington.

Are they as good as their 6-1 record.  It's hard to say until they play a contender.

I think they’re for real. Morey fixed their fatal flaws in one summer (shooting around Ben and Jo). They’ve got as good of a chance to come out of the East as anybody else. East playoffs should be very fun. Just don’t trade for Harden. Ball hogs don’t age well and his playoff performances have been disappointing. I’d rather take my chances with a young core and a properly constructed roster.

I agree.  I definitively do not want Harden.  He has a lot of talent but tends to be a hog.  Last night, I watched an interview with Tobias Harris and he mentioned playing unselfish basketball.

Look at their strength of schedule. Sure they beat the celtics their first game of the season but their other wins are against teams that include: the wizards, hornets, magic, and knicks. Not to mention their loss of the season was to the cavs... lol. Nothing to rave about yet, think everyone’s sucking off the sixers a bit prematurely but that’s just my opinion.

They beat the Lakers at home.  Yesterday, one of the announcers mentioned that if the Sixers win the championship, Danny Green will be the first player in the history of sports to be on four different championship teams.  If the Sixers win this year, he will have been on different championship teams in 3 consecutive years.  Howard, Green and Curry have been good additions to a team that is seeing it young stars mature into elite players

Not making it past the Nets (or possibly even the Bucks) right now. Was real exciting for y’all to be in the last two teams in Harden talks, but now that that’s over the sixers look like ECF losers at best and second round exit at worst.

However, you should be psyched for the future with a solid core, golden goose vet coach like Doc, and magician GM like Morey. Bench depth will come with time and Ben will either develop a shot or be efficiently traded.

The Nets lost back to back games to the Cavs.  They will be lucky to make it out of the first round.  The Harden deal was not a good one for the Nets.  They gave up way too much.

I'm under the assumption that these guys don't really care about regular season games atm (hence Kyrie not even showing up to games & practices). ESPN likes to drum up "its not working?!" when in reality these dudes don't give a rats ass as long as they snag a playoff seat (especially easy now with new play-in games). Agreed nets are noticeably more top heavy post-harden deal, however I still doubt any team in the east can take on those three superstars playing at peak playoff level. Their bench is worse now, but not that bad.

And as far as "They will be lucky to make it out of the first round" ... free game to say whatever your heart desires online but IRL that'd be one risky ass bet. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong. Guess we'll have to revisit this thread come playoff szn ;)

I am interested to see how it plays out.  I think the trade was a bad one for them because they already had an elite point guard and they gave away 3 first round picks plus depth.  I was unsure about the new additions to the Sixers like Howard, Green and Curry but the combined team is greater than the sum of the parts.  When you add these guys to 3 studs like Embiid, Harris and Simmons, they become a difficult team to beat.  I hope Embiid stays healthy because so far, they have lost each game he did not play.

I haven't been watching enough of them. I watched last night and they almost blew a lead to the Lakers and AD has been looking like ass. I think Doc Rivers is doing a fantastic job. The fact that they gave Toby the last game shot was big. They need to do that because they cannot solely depend on Embiid moving forward. You know Ben Simmons bitchass isn't working on his jumper. In a seven game series, I'm probably still taking the Nets or Bucks but the 76ers are definitely becoming more real by the day.

It's a long season -- let's see how it shakes out.
