GGG vs. Canelo: a Delusional Judge, Money, Future of Boxing

It was a great fight. Arguably the most important fight for boxing since Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Sadly, one of the judges, Adelaide Byrd, scored the fight 118-110 for Canelo, causing the fight to be ruled as a draw. Regardless of whether this fight was a draw, or not, there is no way Canelo won 10 rounds out of the 12 rounds. Most people agree GGG should have won the fight.

Byrd has a track record of producing controversial scorecards - she has made terrible judgements in 2012 and in 2016. Needless to say, this is terrible for the sport. Some fans felt insulted that McGregor got to fight Mayweather over many other better boxers, but they weren't disgusted in the same way they are by this scorecard.

22,358 people attended the GGG v. Canelo fight in Las Vegas, compared to 17,698 people at the Money Fight, but the fighters will obviously make significantly less due to their weaker brands. The underdog Canelo successfully negotiated a larger purse, since his brand, Golden Boys, is stronger in the US, than Tripple GGG. The base salaries for the fight were $5m and $3m respectively, but with all the viewers and PPV, estimates suggest they will be earning 10x more than their base. Connor and Floyd made more than double as much.

Will there ever be a fight that brings as much revenue as the Money Fight? Will people pay for a rematch between Canelo and GGG, considering what happened? Why do some people say boxing is a dying sport? Is it because of the lack of a central authority in boxing, which has arguably enabled Byrd's terrible scoring of the fight? Or, is it because PPV is getting too expensive for fight sport fans in a time when MMA is becoming more popular?

Finally, was the fight rigged?

That would be insane. I cant imagine that. The Money Fight was entertaining, but it was cringe to see Conor hit him in the back of the head. I didn't think he would continue boxing. I guess its good that Conor goes out of his comfort zone, but he's an MMA fighter and should do that, rather than embarrass himself in boxing. I would much rather see a GGG Canelo remach.
