How Far Do the Republicans Go with their Fascist Cosplay?
So, we are now at a stage where a few things are self evident:
1) Biden obviously won the election and it wasn’t actually that close (306 EVs, largest popular vote win by # ever and largest by percentage in a couple decades), just the mechanism of which votes got counted this year, including the large mail in ballot percentage and the GOP actively disallowing mail in ballot counting ahead of time, created for more drama than usual.
2) Trump and his team plan on doing everything they can publicly to try and undermine American democracy and flirt with the idea of an authoritarian overthrow of the election. And their rhetoric has already resulted in death threats and arrests related to election workers - which I expect to only get worse if this keeps up.
3) Despite the really explosive claims coming from Trump and his team, they have yet to attach a single piece of real evidence to lawsuit and none of the current lawsuits would have any effect on the election results. They are also 0-10 in the lawsuits already decided.
4) While the Murdoch’s seem ready to abandon him, we are seeing obviously political statements by people like Bill Barr and Rich Grenell . Some Senators and officials have taken to lying continually on TV/social media. Trump looks to be trying to fire appointees who won’t back him and is even illegally installing a sycophant as the head of Defense. And I’m sure there will be more to come.
With all that said, how far do you think we get down the authoritarian playbook before the government/republicans step in to try and save democracy? Or does Mitch McConnell and Bill Barr (who met this morning!) try and allow Trump to basically destroy our republic?
I want to say I trust in the system, but what we’ve seen so far suggests, to me, that unless there is an active Republican opposition that we could see a full on attempted coup and continued violence and terrorism from trumps base.
"If Fascism Ever Comes to America, It Will Come in the Name of Liberalism" - Ronald Reagan
Ronnie gave amnesty to 9 million illegals. Sit down.
Not saying I agree with everything he did. Just thought it was a relevant quote and a quote that I wholeheartedly agree with.
Anyone looking at what is going on through a rational perspective should be able to gather that the above picture that you have painted is alarmist at best, and fear mongering at worst. Looking through the same rational lens, it should be equally easy to determine that Trump’s tactics are desperate and reek of mistruth, but are not fascist, and quite frankly your use of the term here only serves to further dilute its true meaning. Additionally, there will be no coup, the mechanics of which almost always require military participation (this will not happen). Lastly Republicans are currently supporting Trump’s claims as they lose nothing by doing so. They can appear as though they support the legal system and Trump (which may be important given his likely continued influence on the party), but when he inevitably loses in court they will wipe their hands and go back to business as usual. Please calm down and wait for our systems of checks and balances to do the work that is now required.
what if the system of checks and balances proves that you are wrong and that there is significant fraud? What will you say? How can your belief be disproved?
You and the other commenter misunderstand my position. It should be very suspicious when someone with everything to lose begins to make claims which they are initially unable to provide evidence for, and which obviously would save them from their current predicament. What you might also point out, is that it would be patently ridiculous for a person not to immediately point out suspicions that they have even if proof cannot be immediately furnished. However, my comment is not based on any of this, and is in fact based on the current legal record the Trump team has accrued. Since their legal challenges are going poorly, I am willing to make a guess that they will continue to find little success, and because of this I am willing to jump to the above conclusion, i.e. Biden will in fact be the next president. If their legal challenges begin to pan out (which would directly imply permissible evidence is found), then I would say that the system of checks and balances and justice in this country is working precisely as intended. If these successful legal challenges ultimately change the result, then that should be the accepted result.
Yea, just undermine a country's election. No big deal. Spineless.
You misunderstand my position, see my other comment.
1) Not Fascist cosplay. Authoritarian cosplay, because DJT and his allies don't understand the Constitution nor the responsibility of the presidency under the Constitution (quoting Ben Sasse here)
2) McConnell is just trying to be deliberately fuzzy on his wording. There is not a single part of what he says that could be interpreted as "Trump supporting" at the moment. He's right that Trump has the right to pursue his own legal battles (because every candidate has the right to do so, no matter how ludicrous the claims), and he's right that only legal votes should count, no matter how you define legal votes. Now how Trump defines "legal" is dumb. But nothing wrong with words McConnell actually said.
CNN again is making the entire Republican party look nefarious. Vast generalizations and putting words out of context. Straight out of FOX playbook.
CNN doesn’t have to do much of anything, the GOP has done that on its own and it’s not even close.
Are you living in reality? Are you not seeing the press conferences from the orange man and his squad claiming massive fraud, very very corrupt anywhere he’s losing, stop the count!, then recount! , then every vote must be counted from Malaria the fake Slovenian wife...oh and multiple bogus legal actions overturned already. Not to mention his dumb kids and slob Pompeo claiming a smooth trump 2nd term transition is underway.
Yeah, I agree with the sentiment. The lawsuits are frivolous, mostly because the difference in votes is to large in multiple states. They have a right to sue but who is paying for these attorneys? The whole Barr thing is bizarre and very inappropriate. Does he understand the meaning of a conflict or the appearance of a conflict? Barr continues to sell his soul to the devil. Not sure why, though. Trump is on his way out. The good news is that Biden is going to hire some very smart people who are actually qualified for their roles. We do not need any Ivanka and Jared types running around in the white house. I am thrilled that Betsy Devos will be on her way out.
Yup, I just find it so disturbing that so many still support a conman on the level of some joker on day time tv. Where is the basic human decency? How can so many vote twice for a man who's more likely a worst POTUS than someone picked randomly out of the US population over 18? Beyond pathetic and a rather brutal indictment on a large portion of America's values in regards to democracy, racial tolerance and the truth. And to see the two Republican senators from Georgia call for the resignation of Georgia's Trump supporting Secretary of State just because the vote didn't go their way is a disgrace like no other. Also, I've come to the conclusion that AG Barr being a very smart, competent person doesn't take away from the fact that his behaviors directly flow from the awful beliefs he very much holds himself. I think the last 4 years have taught me that our virtually impossible to amend constitution has definitely held us back as a nation but also protected us from the frightening elements of our society.
I too look forward to qualified, thoughtful people in government and to not having to deal with Trump's exhausting personality. Very excited to see who he puts in place at the Treasury etc.
Lol just stop man. Dems had legions of followers ready to burn and loot cities in case of a Trump victory.
Except Dems accepted the loss Hillary Clinton faces the night it happened , Biden stomped the orange man and he is still trying to undermine the whole election process.
Really? Do the multiple years of lawsuits and falsified documents not count as undermining the election, or did that slip your mind?
Honestly the opposition to Trump following through with his lawsuits and the media trying to discredit Trump immediately is making me more suspicious about the whole voting thing than anything that Trump said of his own mouth.
Are you suspicious of the voting in the states where republicans won seats in the house? Why would a rational human being believe anything that Trump says. He is indifferent between the truth and lies. He has been alleging fraud before one vote was counted.
I'll be honest I haven't paid much attention to the House elections. It was pretty clear that the Dems were going to retain the majority (and they tend to stick together), so a few seats being picked up means little. It's just like in the Senate where it looks like Republicans will lose 2 seats, but still keep the majority. That said, if someone does challenge the results (no matter D or R), I will fully support their challenge.
He’s had 11 lawsuits thrown out already. The only one remaining that has any legal merit has very little effect on the race. Yet he continues to say incendiary things in public that is actively hurting the very fabric of our nation - things his own legal team has admitted in court are not accurate. This isn’t a “he has some good faith lawsuits he wants to see through” situation. It’s a “he actively says things in public meant to hurt our country while his legal team admits those things are false and/or fails to provide evidence for”.
I might agree with you if there was a good faith argument happening here. But there isn’t - and clearly he’s actively hurting the country so he can keep doing this to grift more people out of their money as his “legal defense fund” is actively paying down his campaign debts and funding the RNC.
It is too soon to tell, but It is possible we could be heading towards a crisis. Trump knows what is likely waiting for him when he leaves office. His presidency is basically over and he has taken his ball and gone home, wherever that might be. Anything is possible with this guy but I doubt that he will concede. There are two courses of action that I see as possible. He tries to take these cases to the supreme court but I just do not think the SCOTUS will want to hear several election cases. His other option might be to leave the country and never come back. I know it seems far fetched but if he thinks that prosecution is waiting for him, he might try to get ahead of it be leaving the US.
Just because the lawsuits so far have been tossed out doesn't mean there wasn't a scenario that led to the lawsuit. For instance the sharpie issue in AZ, that was confirmed to be true, but AZ officials said it didn't affect the overall vote, so it got tossed out. That situation was sketch but after the appropriate investigation was found to be normal. There have been some other irregularities that are still being looked into. Personally what bugs me is that the media keeps pushing Biden as the winner and that Trump should concede now, when swing states haven't even finished counting/certifying their votes, and the requested recounts and audits haven't taken place. On election day night when it seemed like Trump was going to win Biden told his supporters to "be patient and let the process play out." and this was covered by the media. However the same reasoning has been thrown out the door when Biden has the upper hand and it seems like he is going to win.
Trump’s lawsuits and objections will go nowhere because he lost fair and square by a sizeable margin. Hopefully he doesn’t rile up his followers too much. We all saw this coming though, with Trump railing about voting fraud for months. The most surprising thing to me is that Bill Barr is still acting as Trump’s political hatchet man. He must see that Trump’s ship is sinking, like 99% of people out there, so not sure why he intends to go down as well.
I was told that I was an alarmist for saying this was going to happen. Now it’s happening.
Real Clear Politics just pulled Biden’s PA win, leaving him with 259 electoral votes.
https://www.foxsports640.com/real-clear-politics-withdraws-bidens-win-i…
What is their rationale for moving PA back to toss up?
Real Clear Politics? Lol
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/11/breaking-exclusive-system-glit…
“We’ve reported on numerous events identified in the 2020 election already which are being referred to as ‘glitches’ by the Democrats. Tonight we just uncovered another ‘glitch’ in Wisconsin. When this one is confirmed it will result in a 19,500 vote gain for Trump making the Wisconsin race a total toss-up.”
Gateway Pundit is literally a fake news site. Not like a “I think it’s too partisan” website. But a actively doctors videos/photos and spreads/creates verifiably false information like blaming democrats for all sorts of debunked conspiracies.
Expect more of yourself. Seriously.
Yeah just pretty much posted to see what people thought.
I want to see Hunter Biden as president, what a chad mad lad
As someone who has been working on open source data science projects to identify fraud, I can say that this evidence needs to be analyzed by the supreme court and then put for all to display, otherwise it will all just be "fascism"
Democrats & Liberals claim to be part of "the Resistance" but how is that the case?
You're supported by all the big corporations, banks, big tech, the mainstream media, education, sport and liberals have even infiltrated the video gaming industry.
It is usually those who are supported by big institutions that are the most corrupt.
Lefties love being manipulated. They're all betas mentally and subs physically.
Dude, trump is manipulating you and you are a dumbass for falling for it. I get it, you are still too young to understand, right now this is just entertainment for you. Pretty soon it will mean more. Good luck.
