SOTU might've just won 2020
I feel like all republicans, for the first time, will 100% agree on a Trump branded message. And I wonder how many non-hardcore rightists will lean right in 2020. This is a very unifying message; America not going back to socialism. Trump vs socialism. I might be bias because I've been screaming against socialism since Bernie 2016, when most wanted to claim he was not a socialist and democratic socialism is good and stuff. Thoughts?
I didn't watch the SOTU, but have read coverage from a few outlets. You're the first mention I've seen about any sort of anti-socialist messaging during the speech. The coverage is 100% focused on the wall. If you think this will be a key platform for 2020, then Trump has a lot of work to do to convince people its anywhere near the top of his priorities list.
Like I said, maybe I'm biased. But, that's a huge topic everywhere I look.
SOTU addresses historically move the President's approval rating by an average of 0.2 points. Your premise that it would "win 2020" is not only completely outlandish, but outright insane. In fact, Trump has the highest amount of polled voters who "would 'definitely not' vote for him in the upcoming election" at around 46%, outpacing Obama by 10!! points in this regard at the same time last reelection cycle according to new 538 Politics data analysis.
Edit: I'm just gonna pile on more here. A new FOX NEWS poll showed that 70% of registered voters want to tax those with incomes of $10MM+ more and 65% of registered voters want to tax those with incomes of $1MM+ more as well.
I dislike socialism in its entirety, however, if you look at actual changes in policy and platform, the right has gone more right than the left has gone left. Both sides of each spectrum are dangerous and should be regarding as such. AOC was a shot in the dark election which should have never happened and probably won't happen again. The district that voted her in was very non-voting. Most of the people probably didn't even realize she had a chance to win vs Crowley.
That being said, I did think the SOTU was was fairly well done, especially for Trump. The issue is reading off a script vs what he actually acts and behaves like are two different things. The SOTU also needs to be fact checked live. It is embarrassing that they can blatantly lie to all of America and get away with it.
Are you insane? Look at consistency polls in political ideas to which partisan people congregate around. The weighted point for the right has shifted more right, however if you look at the left the center has completely collapsed and the midpoint distribution has shifted sharply to the left.
Instead of insulting me can you actually send me where you are getting your information from? I would love to know. Anyways see below. This is from early 2017, so it isn't that dated.
"The CJR study, by scholars at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, at Harvard Law School, and the MIT Center for Civic Media, examined more than 1.25 million articles between April 1, 2015, and Election Day. What they found was that Hillary Clinton supporters shared stories from across a relatively broad political spectrum, including center-right sources such as The Wall Street Journal, mainstream news organizations like the Times and the Post, and partisan liberal sites like The Huffington Post and The Daily Beast.
By contrast, Donald Trump supporters clustered around Breitbart — headed until recently by Stephen Bannon, the hard-right nationalist now ensconced in the White House — and a few like-minded websites such as The Daily Caller, Alex Jones' Infowars, and The Gateway Pundit. Even Fox News was dropped from the favored circle back when it was attacking Trump during the primaries, and only re-entered the fold once it had made its peace with the future president." - WGBH

Link above says moderates voted +13 for Clinton and a 29 point margin for democrats in 2018 exit polling.
What?! This speech will be forgotten by Thursday.
Not even Trump can stop socialism in 2024. The majority of millennials believe it's the way forward because that's what university teaches them and those are the experts. I have read multiple articles on liberal media whitewashing it, so the ground is being prepared. Krugman, Mazzuccato, the Reddit founder and a bunch of other people are cheerleading AOC. You'll get the Green New Deal with a 70% top marginal tax and you are going to like it, or else.
What’s enraging about these tax-the-rich tax proposals is that they won’t actually raise that much money. They are making a “moral” argument about taxation that is actually patently immoral and won’t even succeed. New York State, while the economy is moving along well, saw DECREASED tax revenue with their taxation of high earners.
Ideally, give me both a moral and effective policy, but a policy should be at least moral OR effective.
New polls show even the majority of registered GOP voters want to tax those making 1MM+ in income more along with those making 10MM+.
It has to be done though. Francois Hollande did it and walked back within a few years because state revenue was down and plenty of UHNW moved elsewhere. Many people don't learn until they mess it up (I'm like that in many ways). What worries me is that the fanatics won't learn. They'll mess it up and find excuses. Especially the academia has become the church of preaching irresponsibility.
Trump must win the re-election at all costs

The speech was boring, poorly given, and the tone was all over the place. Doubt it moves the scales much in 2019, much less 2020. Abrams' response was even more boring and I already forget most of what she said. Not sure why she was chosen either - she didn't inspire the country even though she lost. She just...lost.
He didn't make a mockery of the occasion or a complete ass out of himself though, which was nice to see.
What? I disagree...can you give an example of a SOTU address that was more engaging/entertaining? I though the tone was overwhelmingly positive, and there were several memorable moments:
Last time a president took time during the SOTU to talk call an investigation / probe "ridiculous" was Nixon... Would you say it worked out well for him?
Consolation prize....
Btw I agree it'll be forgotten by tomorrow. Or next time Trump tweets.
This branded message reminds me of the fear of communism we had in the US decades ago. People can thrive in a country that has elements of socialism and capitalism. If you don't believe me, just ask Warren Buffett.
