Taylor Swift Time Person of the Year

Taylor Swift was named Time's Person of the Year. Curious on thoughts about this. The Person of the Year is supposed to be the most influential, for better or worse, person of that year. Looking back, I'd say I agree with 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022. I don't agree with 2019 or 2020, and that's independent of my personal opinions on the winners.

Curious about what you guys think about Taylor Swift. I personally think she deserves it. I know several guys in my office listen to her and only admit it when drunk

I don’t listen to her music, not really my type. She seems like a decent person in that I haven’t heard anything negative about her, I otherwise don’t really have an opinion. If you’re a fan, how has she been influential to you this year? You say she deserved to be considered the most influential, why is that and how has she impacted you this year?

I unapologetically love bubblegum pop and women musicians, and I've genuinely tried to like Taylor Swift's music going back a decade or so, and I just can't get into it. It's not good music. I genuinely don't understand the appeal. The lyrics are incredibly shallow, the melodies and harmonies are "mid" (as the youth would say). Her music videos aren't particularly artistically significant. The fact that in the last 2 years she's been elevated from successful musician to once-in-a-generation phenom makes absolutely no sense to me. My little nieces are obsessed with her.

That said, looking back 10 years into the "Person of the Year" acknowledgement, she's arguably the most deserving. In 2021 she was just another successful pop musician. In 2023, she's been elevated to "fans sobbing at her concert" status--like, Beatles status. Her concert ticket is so expensive that she's selling out movie theatres for the "alternative" concerts. Her stardom might be unprecedented in pop history. She makes U2 look like an also-ran.

Utterly meaningless award.

That said, hard to deny TSwift didn't have a banger 2023.

The interesting thing with musicians is that people usually won't like the majority of their songs, but the good ones still have a few pretty solid / catchy ones in their albums

still haven't heard any of her songs

Oh C'mon dude. You must have had Cruel Summer...living in a Lavender Haze? Karma might track you down!

She deserves it becauses she's one of the only artists out there who has different stories and themes to all her songs...AND who isn't selling her songs by singing sexual junk about her body parts, or incorporating those themes into her music. That gets class and is admirable.

Kudos & respect to you Taylor Swift...Well deserved!

I mean, have you seen her concerts? She's ultra-sexualized. I guess her songs aren't, but her concerts definitely are.
