Travel Tips

Hey guys, I took a considerable amount of time off of work with the goal of unwinding and doing a bit of travel (within the US). I’ve never traveled much so didn’t realize how costly it can be. Does anyone have any recommendations for saving money on flights, hotels and food while abroad?

I would recommend landmark based adventures. For example, rafting in the Grand Canyon in AZ, hiking amount the redwoods in Northern California, Surfing in Southern California, kayaking the everglades in Florida, Brothels in Nevada, Pow Wows etc. You don't need to eat out everyday if you get an airbnb. Checkout SouthWest for flights.

google flights is my go to, just plug in your origin and a broad destination (like "California") and it'll show you cheapest destinations. or, if you know where you want to go, just search for that area and it'll give you best prices based upon dates. for example, for one of my trips this year it was maybe 30% more expensive to return on a saturday versus a friday or sunday, never would've known that had I not used google flights

scott's cheap flights - often times it's basic economy (you don't get to choose a seat so likely will get middle) but if you're going solo that doesn't really matter. get on their mailing list

fit everything in a carry on - cheaper airlines charge more for checked bags

if you will be travelling frequently, pick an airline that you will be loyal to - status makes the experience better, even if it's not cheaper, free upgrades, priority boarding, etc., all make it better

if you're travelling to a place where you'll need a car or other expensive things, travel with a group, makes the cost more bearable

consider going outside the US - for me, a week in rome and a 3.5 day weekend in miami/NYC are the same price or rome slightly cheaper (flights included). cheapest vacations I make that aren't just a weekend at a beach in south carolina or something are central america, followed by europe (I don't do europe bougie), the caribbean (cheap to get there but if you don't want food poisoning it isn't that cheap, my aruba trip was the same or more all-in than a week in italy), major US cities (NYC, socal, miami, chicago to a lesser extent), etc. (never been to asia).

skip arranged things unless it's cheap. I've done one tour in my life and that was the vatican, otherwise there's enough out there between tripadvisor and other blogs for you to have a DIY vacation that's plenty fulfilling, plus if you do an airbnb (I 2nd m8's advice) your host will likely have recommendations (even if it's their friends ideas)

Try not to eat at hyped up places. A lot of times those places are all hype. Try to explore the city and hit up the places that the locals go to. Other then that try to plan out your trip. If you are going somewhere for a week it would be a good idea to plan out each day so you know what you have coming up. Lastly, just enjoy it!
