What do you drive?
I will be starting this summer as an IB associate in a city where I will need a car and can't decide what I want to get. I am a car guy but not sure what I should spend on one.
What type of cars do you see at the office?

I always wondered who the fuck purchased this nonsense. Turns out it's oversexed international ironman philanderers such as yourself.
Cute 😭
A smartcar
Honestly, if you don't need practicality and have access to something like a SUV or pickup in the odd situation where you need to move a number of people or bulky items it's tough to go wrong with a Miata. Small, fun, cheap to insure and maintain, and it's got just enough power to be fun without running the risk of sending you to jail for having a heavy foot in 3rd gear like a Corvette can.
If you need something that can do anything, I've always dreamed about a manual Caddy CTS-V wagon, but they're as rare as hen's teeth.
Also, whatever you do, make sure that you have appropriate rubber on the car. Here in greater NY that means UHP summers combined with a winter rated tire. I really like Nokian WRs which use an all-season (aka no-season) compound with a really aggressive winter tread pattern to create a middle of the pack snow tire that drives like an all season in the dry. They also don't wear out or get hard and useless anywhere near as quickly as a dedicated snow. Obviously YMMV based on your location and climate.
For something that can do everything, I think the Mazda 3 hatchbacks are hard to beat. look pretty cool, best in class handling, and there is a lot of room for storage with the hatchback. I have one and whenever one of my friends takes it for a spin there always amazed.
you’re a car guy but don’t know what car to get? come on now
Too many choices. Also just curious what others spend. I’ve thought about a couple year old m3 or possibly a newer m340. Also love the c43
what's your budget looking like? seems like you leaning towards a more luxury car - if you spending the kind of money it seems like you're looking to spend (seems like around 30k, correct if i'm wrong), I would advise you go for something like a lexus gs-f. crazy nice interior and performance, great reliability, lower cost servicing.
I drive the perfect vehicle - Volvo wagon with roof rails and a sub
BMW M3/M4.....ultimate DD
I'm just an analyst and when I am in NY, my car just sits in my family's driveway in Mass, but I have an infiniti that is getting pretty good usage over the covid pandemic since I spend much of it at home. It has all wheel drive and performs surprisingly well in the new england snow, and when it's nice out, it is a fun and comfy car to drive. My first car was an early 2000's nissan that I liked a lot in high school and college until it totally shit the bed, so I am partial to the nissan brands.
Have my eye on a Cayman S if I can find the right mix of options + CPO
I love the cayman, just wasn’t sure if I’d look like an ass driving one as a first year associate. I’d also love a couple year old 911.
a used Hyundai Accent that I actually share with my wife. we invest the rest. $210K invested at age 27. trust me when I say the kind of car you drive doesn't matter. make wise decisions that your older self will thank you for.
If you are on WSO asking what you should get / what you should spend then you are definitely not a car guy.
I know what cars I like. I’m more curious what others are spending on cars at the associate level.
Who cares what others are spending, buy what works for your budget.
I've got a MB GLC300. Pretty nice car and it didn't break the bank, other than the annual service (oil change) which is a little pricey. Haven't had a single issue in my past few years of ownership.
It's probably still 1/2 the price of an oil change for a Porsche though.
For real. I can't tell you how many times I hear someone complain about their $1k oil change on a Range Rover
