Any buy-side firms recruit at Duke or UMich Ross?
HS senior looking to break into buy-side out of undergrad (PE, HF, Trading, etc), and got admitted and have narrowed down to Duke vs. Ross. Obvi I do understand that breaking in buy-side is difficult anywhere, so just wondering which school out of the two has the best exposure to buy-side firms. And if there is a solid buy-side network, which firms recruit at each specific school? Thanks for your help.
yeah, Ho Lee Fuk Capital
Insight Partners recruits heavily from Ross (Target) for them... Bain Capital - Tech Opps has a few analysts from Duke
go to duke
yes
Apollo has a pipeline at UM for like 1-2 kids every other year or so I believe. Part of their endowment is with them. Insight recruits there as well.
Bain Cap and BX recruit from Duke.
Can't speak about Michigan but from my friends last year Duke sent people to BX, Bain, KKR, Insight, Vista, and Audax.
Ares and Oaktree also both recruit heavily from Duke.
Know kkr and bain recruit from ross
Duke student here. Can confirm that Bain Cap, BX, Ares, and Oaktree all recruit from Duke. Quant firms (Two Sigma, Optiver, Jane Street) and Large Asset Managers (BlackRock, Fidelity, Vanguard) do as well, but not to the extent of the other aforementioned firms. I can name at least one person currently working at or going to every single one of the aforementioned firms from Duke. PM me if you have questions.
Don't know the Duke scene well, but do personally know two people over the years who took Michigan Ross over Duke... shocker. If you go look at some top club websites at Michigan (MII, GIC, MIBC, etc.) you'll see that for a public school our buyside opps are pretty good. Really think its underlooked here. For the last three years:
2 Ares PE, 1 Ares Special Situations, 3 or 4 Blackstone (Real Estate, Strategic Partners), 1 TPG Capital PE, 1 Bain Capital PE, 1 KKR PE, 1 Audax, a ton of Insight Ventures, and lots of smaller/MM vanilla PE, growth equity, and HF shops. Not really familiar with trading but think there has been a couple Citadel and Point72 guys before. Missing a lot of AM positions.
Historically looking at alumni lists, we have placed at funds like Apollo, Carlyle, Oaktree, WP, Bridgewater, Melvin Capital, Viking, Cerberus, HPS, CD&R, GIC, Golden Gate, Dragoneer, and Tiger Global down the line, though lots of these people came from top IBs before and not out of undergrad.
Just something to think about though you may have made your decision.
I don't think TPG hires PE analysts out of undergrad. At least not for investment roles
