BB IBD -> H/S -> PE?

Hey all, hope you’re having a pleasant weekend.

I am about to become an Associate 0 in IBD at a JP / Centerview type place in London and am considering applying for a U.S. MBA in September, with a start in Autumn 2024.

I have quite a few side interests that i pursue which have encouraged me to stay in banking as my work life balance / coverage / mentorship and culture is excellent. I am only really keen on moving to MF PE and due to the recession, hiring has sort of froze up.

I’d like to ask how bleak MBA PE recruiting is in the US, for an individual with top banking experience (top ranked as well), say a H/S MBA and considerable interesting extracurricular which i have been told by recruiters are quite interesting.

if I am a truly excellent technically, is this a route you would risk pursuing in my position? Let’s assume the cost of attendance is 0 as I am fortunate to have been offered full funding by this organisation I work with.

No I don't have US Citizenship but would likely get the Stem OTP so would have 3 years to work in the US without the H1B.

Its a different org

Ok so it's going to be a very uphill battle unless you're a woman or an under represented minority

Not impossible but very difficult. Post MBA. PE is usually seen as a partner track position and they usually require pre-MBA PE experience.

I would also seriously caution against coming to the US on OPT. Look at the latest stats but including the masters visa quota you have less than 30% chance per year. You are definitely not guaranteed an H1B anymore after an MBA. I have seen several friends if mine have to leave after they weren’t able to land it.

Risky if you were aiming for any PE, especially for MF. I think GetOfficeHours has an article somewhere about PE numbers going into Harvard and going out (they suck but that’s the only source I’ve seen write about this) - looks pretty bleak for people who don’t have pre-MBA experience. H/S doesn’t carry as much weight as pre-MBA experience

Currently at S and have friends at H so can give you my perspectives. Breaking in to MF PE without pre-MBA PE experience is very challenging. Here at S I only know of 2 such candidates and I have heard things are looking equally grim at H.

I also don't know a single investment banker here at S - people have either come from buyside roles already or from different backgrounds (might of course be some selection bias in there)

Thanks for sharing, curious if people from non traditional buyout/Growth PE experience were able to get offers for PE firms?
