Duff and Phelps vs Accenture
Got an offer at Duff and Phelps as a valuation analyst and also Accenture for their SI&T.
- Finance major, top 30 undergrad school with a decent GPA.
I'm thinking about the future prospects (ultimately would like to end up in BB in fin.), MBA opportunities in each path because I will probably stick with the field. Both pay same.
Any recommendations, Is Duff a good path for bb and why?
Duff & Phelps to banking is possible, but certainly not a given. Analyst jobs at D&P and its competitors (mostly the Big 4 val groups) teach a similar skill set to banking but the overall caliber of employee, engagement, and experience is a significant step down. People do make that move (I did-Big 4 val to HF) but only a small portion.
I don't know what SI&T does exactly but I would take Accenture over D&P unless I was 100% sure I wanted to move into banking. It's possible to make a move from Accenture to finance post-MBA (one of the sr. analysts at my firm went Accenture>MBA>MM Bank>Top Bank>Buyside) and you will have a much more valuable name on your resume if you decide to do anything outside of finance.
Accenture SI&T is pure IT consulting and won't teach you any skills for IB. Even if you go MBA track, you should ideally be in the Management Consulting track, but SI&T won't close the door. If you want to improve finance skills and stay on the track (even if BB doesn't work out), D&P is a better choice. MBA opportunity wise, they both are probably are at least the same.
I'm only one person, but I started my career in Accenture's SI&T practice. I spent four years there. I'm finishing my MBA and starting at a BB after graduation.
Anyways I disagree that you will not get any IB relevant skills from Accenture SI&T. If you perform well and ask for the right work you should be competent building books, running spreadsheet models, and managing client relationships. Certainly an IB analyst will develop better book building and modeling skills, but with a top MBA and hard work you should be good enough to get a shot at a BB IBD.
Thanks, it seems like there is more support toward the tech side at Accenture and D&P seems like a relatively unheard of name in the field.
Not to take the forum too off topic - from what I understand the valuation that is mostly done(at D&P) is purchase price allocation or good will write off in compliance with FAS, does this sound interesting to anyone?
That is an accurate description of what they do. Shoot me a PM if you want to ask specific questions about it.
I'd say go with Valuation over IT consulting if banking is your final goal. You can learn a lot in Valuation and if you're smart you'll be the smartest of your peers and shine through. In a year or two you can likely lateral to IB if you're on top of your shit.
Hey Traxaem, Is the offer from the Morristown office? When do you have to let them know by?
No, its wasn't for Morristown. I was given 2 weeks to decide.
Which did you take?
