Believe pension funds mostly follow the MFs of the world into investments. Great benefits but IMO kind of diametric the philosophies of a person who is into PE anyways.
You get paid pretty well, hours are decent, and get a fat pension, but you don’t get paid even comparably as much as private PE firms pay + you get no carry, so there’s less incentive.
This isn’t true at all.
OTPP pays more than almost all MM PE firms in Canada. There isn’t carry, but there is LTIP that functions like carry.
It’s well below the Atlas and Birch Hill’s of the world tho, no?

Altas and Birch Hill are wildly different firms... It is absolutely below Altas and on par with Birch Hill, if not slightly above.
I think the way to think about the value proposition is more about doing Private Equity at a shop with good deal flow, good WLB (although industry group dependent to an extent), and earning well above average money to do so. LTIP gives you a nice little 2-year coinvestment opportunity in a well performing, fee free fund. The Pension you earn there if you spend a career at the shop is no joke either and gives you a lot of financial flexibility to spend your well earned money and worry less about retirement.
No you will not earn millions upon millions of dollars at the pensions, but you will earn enough to live a great life, and actually have the WLB to live your life and spend that well earned money.
Fwiw, have friends at otpp and all of them love it and wouldn't trade it for a GP experience ever.
For a sophomore internship, it's probably one of the best you can have in Canada. Hell, even for a junior internship and full time job so many would kill for that gig.
