IB TMT necessary for tech PE?
Looking at silver lake's website and most associates don't have a TMT background. I'm seeing people from consumer/retail, HC, natural resources etc. So you don't have to come from TMT?

It can help but not necessary. I got a vista offer from a non tech background for example (just adding a data point since yours are all SL).
OK good. Would certain industries (energy) be a dealbreaker?

No only an interest in tech is necessary.
Any tips to what extent / how to demonstrate interest in tech if not coming from a tech background?
Look into existing portcos of the funds of interest and understand rationale on some of them / pick some favorites to do deeper digging on. Start thinking about any of the funds sub verticals that interest you and do some brief industry related research to understand how the underlying tech actually works, and then look into investing/PE specific trends / research for that vertical. Try to gain an understanding of how the approach to modeling / valuation could differ for a tech company, understand kpis / metrics relevant to tech co's, etc. Articles / reports like the one linked are helpful if you control f for software, technology, etc to understand trends and multiples. From an interview perspective, your interest in tech will come through if you ask insightful questions about portco's / you give insightful explanations on why you are interested in tech investing or a specific portco https://www.bain.com/globalassets/noindex/2021/bain_report_2021-global-…
Are tech IB candidates favored?
Yes- all posts above are true. You don’t have to be in a TMT background, but if you’re not coming from a top bank, you better believe it helps.
