Non-Target to PE?
Hi all,
Hope all is well and appreciate anyone who contributes.
I am a mega non-target, all the people from my school who are in PE/IB are MBAs.
according to LinkedIn I will be the only analyst to make it into IB from my school. As well, I transferred from community college to my state school and migrated from Europe, so I think my writing/speaking skills could use some work? Which I think might make me look less posh than my competition.
Worked a lot of shitty jobs to get by (think HolidayInn, UberEats, construction etc), just grinded out and hoped someone would notice my perseverance and give me a shot, which a Mid-Tier BB did.
I was already denied a shot at a Tier 1.5/2 RX shop due to my school. When the MD took me out for dinner to discuss, he said other candidates had a better pedigree. I looked them up post the process, all of them went to Wharton pretty much. I lost my shit though when he said every MD loved speaking to me, and according to him I answered every technical correct, and got 2 technicals correct that none of the other kids did. But what does that matter when I grew up in a 30,000 peole town in buttfuck Europe where people do nothing and I learned what Wharton was when I was 22 and a junior out of community college?
I am much more than flesh and blood, yet alone an institution on a paper.
My whole life I have been hustling and always sniffing out opportunities. I learned what IB was at 4AM while reading Quora on my night shift, got the FT gig 9 months after reading that post on Quora.
but what does that matter then when every HH and Partner will tell me to fuck off because I went to community college and a shitty state school. Always felt my pedigree was looked down upon by kids and other finance professionals from other elite schools.
but as David Goggins says: “they don’t know me son”, and these kids don’t know me. I am willing to work till my eyes bleed out from staring at a shitty deck and a 3 statement model.
Sorry for the short rant there. I am still proud of what I have achieved and thank God every night for the position he gave me.
I guess my bottom line is: do I have a chance at a top fund? Or just aim to try and lateral to MS/GS and try from there? Or go to corp dev or LMM?
edit: I just want the best of the best for myself. My whole life was unconventional from the beginning and always felt the odd one out growing up. This country gave me a chance and I want to maximize that chance and the talents God gave me. I settled for less many times, and never plan on settling for less anymore. I hope this clarifies a little bit why I want this so bad.

Yes, it is possible. In my experience, with the exception of MF, undergrad matters less for PE recruiting. I would focus on being a top bucket analyst in your first year.
Doing MF PE from non-target. Difficult but certainly possible! Don't let your background hold you back. If you're good at what you do and hardworking (which it seems like you are), people will recognize it sooner or later.
What was your background before MFPE? Are you diverse(if that plays a factor if non target)?
Did some search fund internships and worked with a few startups but nothing like a BB internship. Got an internship at the MF PE for my junior summer and joined the firm ft. Not diverse either.
MF is probably going to be a stretch, but for MM and LMM being non-target doesn't really matter. At those levels your banks usually more important than your school
this was a great read. congrats bro. I’m also struggling here to pull off something that’s never been done before, and was wondering if I could PM you? I’d love to learn more about your story and recruiting process.
