Offer rescinded - venting

My firm raised my salary by a substantial amount of money when I told them I was leaving to go to another buyside shop in addition to other benefits.

For context, I really like my current job and team and am well respected within the firm so it's difficult to grasp leaving in general.

I asked the shop I was going to join if they could meet me in the middle and they rescinded my offer and accused me of "retrading" on the offer like in a process.

Just depressed about the whole thing because I was really looking forward to joining them but didn't want to take such a substantial pay cut, in addition to other issues.

I know, call me stupid.

Oh well.

Politically I’m fine I promise - but agree. Nothing good will come out of this.

This is backwards. If your new shop doesn't expect this to happen the they're idiots. Especially if the new shop comp is below what you wanted. Woulda told them to fuck off and pay people correctly.

If they were really interested in hiring you they would have met you in the middle.

Be glad you didn’t end up there and look forward to your next opportunity. Know your worth !!

It’s funny, on mobile it actually lets you know who is commenting on your posts. I feel like you may be a principal from the firm. If you are, I actually didn’t say I wasn’t coming - I just wanted to have the discussion. But I agree, it was a good lesson.

Let me see if I get it right, you accepted the offer, which you then used to get a salary bump at your current job, then tries to get the PE firm who you had already accepted the offer from to bump up the salary?

If that's the case then they did nothing wrong. You can't change your terms after you agree

No I didn’t try and get a salary bump they gave me a salary bump + other benefits. I went back to the PE fund transparently about how my situation of already taking a 20k pay cut (which I told them before) to join is now a 60-80k pay cut.

lol everyone shitting on OP for essentially wanting to make more money, wtf? This is so dumb the only thing that matters in our industry is money ("but muh culture" yeah culture RELATIVE to money)

No, the issue is that he agreed to something and then reneged. That in itself signals to the employer how he will conduct himself while doing business. If you think it's smart to retrade for short term gains then you're showing your age and experience. A bit reputation follows you all career.

I never reneged, I merely wanted to have a conversation to reassure me that taking a very large pay cut + career certainty was worth it likely heading. Into a recession. I understand what. I did wrong and am not saying I don’t deserve the repercussions. A
