Any Recommended Training Programs For Career Switch?

On investment team of a mid sized pension on the west coast, doing mostly fund commitments to PE, Infra, and RE. While I learn a lot, I am just an allocator and never really get into the weeds of a deal.

Looking to maybe start exploring some acquisitions or asset management type roles, but wanted to see if you guys had any recs for training programs to help bridge the gap from going LP-to-GP. I have my undergrad in finance, and not really trying to give up current salary to get my MBA or masters in RE

The REFAI Certification seems like a good place to start for $1,500. It looks like it uses a lot of the same modeling material as the REFM course along with more broad coverage of CRE principles.

Interesting, thanks I’ll take a look!

I had a guy in my MBA class who was doing that exact transition, I wouldn't necessarily rule out a masters yet. Definitely look into part-time programs, depending on where you are there are some great options that let you still work while making that transition. I know a few people who have actually made their job transition just on being in a part-time program, they didn't even have to wait until graduation.

I really liked Adventures in CRE when I was trying to pivot. I also practiced all of the modeling test prompts I could find on this site and didn't end up having to take any certifications/training programs to make the pivot happen. You're already working at an allocator, so it's a better starting point for a career shift than most, so just network a lot, make sure your modeling skills are adequate, and start reading up on general real estate concepts.

Noted thank you. Yeah we don’t do much deal-level modeling as you can imagine, so will have to brush up accordingly

Honestly you'd be better served using the time you would spend getting a certificate just networking with developers/acquisitions people/asset managers. The things you actually need to learn to be effective in a GP role are almost all learned on the job over time and deal level modeling is something you can learn 90% of in your first day in the office.

People have different approaches to this, mind you, but I'd hire someone with your background.

Good to know, thanks for the input. Yeah my modeling skills are largely.. dated. Usually I’m just reviewing a GP model and seeing what type of crazy u/w assumptions they have
