Have you ever been the only candidate for a position

There’s a small firm that I’m interviewing for, and I can’t tell if I’m the only applicant. They are moving the process fairly slowly but I’ve already had two interviews with the EVP and the SVP(potential supervisor) that they’ve said were “helpful and very productive”.

They said in the second interview that the next steps would be an in person interview. I emailed them with references as they requested and they followed up saying they won’t call them until after my in person interview.

I emailed them my availability this week, and told them I’ll be traveling for work all next week. Also my resume was passed along to them through networking and this position wasn’t posted publicly.

I know I’m too invested in this opportunity, but do you think they’re shopping for other candidates? Do you know of anyone or has your company ever interviewed and hired a single candidate without considering alternatives?

I've been the only candidate at a company that most here would start drooling over. Lol, why the monkey shit. Just answering OP’s question!

I’ve been at a couple companies where the interview process was basically bringing in people 1 by 1 to see if they’re the person they want to hire. EG they don’t go to the next one until they’re sure the last one isn’t a fit. So in those cases, they were all the only candidate at the time they were interviewing

Yes - my last two jobs were smaller firms growing and asking brokers/references for any referrals. I was referred for both and as far as I'm aware there were no other candidates being considered.
