Interview Follow Up
So, I had what I think was a good few of rounds of interviews for a good opportunity. They’ve asked for references and a work sample.
I’ve already started strategizing about how I can “hit the ground running” and I’m eager to share with the group the things I’ve started to put in place. Would it be a bad idea to send a follow up with a high level about the things I’ve been working on in order to hit the ground running?
I don’t want to come off as overly eager, but additionally, I don’t have an offer in hand (or verbal offer), and I want to let them know I’m ready to “seal the deal.”
Thoughts?
To each their own, but I would say don't do it. I've had several experiences in the interview process where things were going great and I decided to go above and beyond and it ended up hurting me. It's sort of like the interview process itself. Answer only what you are asked...anymore can open you up to a can of worms. It sounds like the interviews went really well especially if they are asking for references and work samples. If the interviews went poorly then I'd say go above and beyond because it would only help you. But if the interviews went well, then I think going above and beyond has a higher chance of hurting you than helping, but my advice is anecdotal.
Thanks, helpful.
Can you be any more specific with your experience ?
In one interview that went very well, I sent actual thank you cards to my interviewers and the associate who was rooting for me literally called me to tell me that some people on the team thought I was too enthusiastic and that's why i didn't get an offer. In another instance I was asked to do a a very simple modeling test and I added more assumptions to complicate the model to show my knowledge, but in doing so, my answers vastly differed from the "answer sheet" they had on the case study.
Damn. Those are both ridiculously nit-picky…
Personally would not do that. If it went as well as you think then you should receive the offer soon. Once offers in hand you can talk with the MD/Director/etc. you’ll be reporting to and send him some of your ideas to hit the ground running. Basically.. wait until you’ve secured the bag.
Don't. If they want to send you an offer they will. This won't do anything but possibly hurt you.
Agree, don't. Once your on the team, show'em they made the right choice.
What level role is this? I would be careful about sending too much "extra" stuff that could complexify a decision that you may already be on "track" to win.
I will, say, I did something in the realm of this while in the start of finalists round to get my current job. Without giving too many personal details, what I did (an analysis, write up of sorts) was very fitting to the type of position, seniority of the position, and nature of the specialty requested in the role. It was a home run success, I may have won the job anyway, but why tempt fate... I took the go big or go home approach.
Still, I am not sure what you are thinking about demonstrating as "hit the ground running" and things "started to put in place" is what I'm talking about.. Being honest, it sounds like something you hear from an over eager prospective gf/bf may say in early dating (like.. 'ooh my furniture will fit great in your apartment' or 'I spent all day today imagining what our kids will look like'). That may be way over the top of what you are actually thinking... but I hope you get my message, gotta know the cadence of the dance!
So, unless it is something that makes tons of sense, is in context, and adds/shows some value, I wouldn't.
