Is CBRE HR a dead end?
Reached out to multiple brokers at CBRE. Two (in different cities) have offered to connect me with HR, as well as reach out to other brokers I can talk to. Is their HR a dead end? They've reached out in one city and asked for resume, cover letter, linkedin and see what openings they have. Please let me know, I've heard from talking to others HR in general is a dead end, but was curious if at CBRE it's different and can lead to an interview.
Everything has to go through HR there, the process is very slow. I got an interview after applying 6 months prior.
yes, 100% a dead end. Broker offers almost always run through the broker teams and the managing director of that specific regional/local office.
Yeah usually what happens with most of the desirable positions is they have a ton of people that they have in mind for the role before they even post it, the HR post is mostly a formality at those shops. It's good to still apply so your resume is on file on the off chance a position opens you weren't originally considering, but in most cases if a bigshot broker wants to hire someone they are just going to recruit themselves and then pass it over to HR for processing/on-boarding.
Thanks, I've been reaching out to alumni at different shops. At certain places there aren't even open positions. There's one shop with a position that I'm applying to and I reached out to someone who I'm talking to today. Looking to mention the open position towards the end of the call and see if there's any advice he can give/maybe put in a good word.
Yeah that's probably the best way to move forward on this I'd say.

I'll say this, my friend got a job awhile ago at CB. He applied for an IS analyst position with a solid office team and got an interview. The Head of HR vetted him first and passed him along to the brokers. He got the offer, but it was brutal starting salary. He asked for more base and they pulled the offer. He worked his ass off for an entire year and interviewed with all of the big shops in town (JLL, HFF, Colliers, etc.). He was very close with a few, but never got the offer he wanted. One year after that first interview at CB, my friend was desperate and applied to an industrial leasing position thinking investment sales wasn't in his future. He sat down for his first interview and who walks in? The HEAD OF HR and she REMEMBERED HIM. He made such a good impression one year ago that she pulled his resume from the 100s of others and brought him in. She was very excited to have him back and then she dropped the bomb. He would not be interviewing with the industrial leasing team. A position just opened up on one of the most dominant MF IS teams on the east coast. You know what happens next. My friend crushes the interview and TAKES that offer. He has worked with that team for over a year now and is crushing it. SO, what's the message here? YES, keep reaching out to Brokers to get on their radar, but DO NOT blow off meeting the head of HR in whatever office you apply to. She was the reason my friend got that unreal job because he found out later that she brought him in first to interview for the position and she knew he'd crush it from there. If you get punted to HR, USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE and someday it may pay off. Now go get that job and Good Luck.
Good for your buddy; that is awesome to hear. Moral of the story is never blow anyone off because that's what dickheads do and no one wants to work with dickhead.
That said, the easiest way onto a team is via its leader (the broker). Pulling yourself out of the HR / online application process is key. Getting in front of the decision maker(s) is important for any negotiation and that typically isn't HR at any company.
Thanks for the response. I didn't mean for it to come across as me blowing off HR. They actually got back to me and they sent my resume to someone in the city I want to be in. They were very helpful and said reach out if I have any other questions.
