Not sure what to do this summer
Currently in a tough situation with regards to how I should spend this summer as someone going for a 2021 SA role. I have yet to go through an interview guide and was planning to use the rest of May to do this as well as network as much as possible. Once May is over, I have several options for June-August and wanted to get some opinions.
Option 1: Remote Bus. Dev. internship at a small unknown firm, 35-40 hrs/wk so no time for IB prep
Option 2: Summer online classes or research, 10-20 hrs/wk so decent amount of time for IB prep
Option 3: Nothing besides IB Prep for the rest of the summer
I am assuming that firms won't hold it against me if I don't do anything this summer (correct me if I'm wrong) so that's why I'm considering allocating all of my time towards prep/networking. I'm also not at all prepared for interviews at this point, so I could use the extra time. The one thing that makes me want to go with Option 1 is that I don't have any finance/business exp. on my resume -- all I have are student orgs and clubs on campus. Was thinking that the bus. dev. summer internship could possibly help my resume (?).
Please let me know what you think I should do. Appreciate any thoughts/insight.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that doing a remote job of 35-40 hours a week will leave you with enough time for IB prep. Prep before and after work and on the weekends. In my opinion it will not take you an entire summer to prep, you will definitely be bored if you choose to go that route.
I can give it a shot, I guess I'm a little hesitant because I've never worked full time like this
How do you want to work in IB if 40hrs a week is enough for you to have no time for prep? Prep on weekends, after work and when you are not busy at work. People will take 6 classes, have a job and play a sport during the semester and still find time to prep.
fair enough, I should give it a shot at least
You got this. It is all about work ethic and time management. I do not want to brag or pump my own tire, but I studied for technicals, networked and took my SIE while taking 15 credit hours and working 30 hours a week and I still went out to drink at least twice a week. If IB is really what you want, you need that drive and commitment to get you there and you can definitely doing it by working 40hrs a week.
I agree, going to be hard to sell the work ethic to banks if they ask why your resume is bare and you explain to them that you couldn’t handle 35-40 hours of work with prep as well. Also, if you truly can’t handle that workload then it seems you may be chasing the wrong jobs.
Seriously? I interned 35 hours a week, took 18 units, and still found time to network and prepare for IB interviews.
Have you considered something like M&A type work at a family office or a search fund? My friends and I were all pretty lazy in college tbh, and did these internships in sophomore year. They turned out to be surprisingly good experience, albeit unpaid, and most were 9-5, so you'd have time to prep.
I'll look into it thanks for the rec!
I think you can negotiate with option A. Limit the amount of time that you'd be giving them. Plus this is a remote internship, so you can 'double-time' them and do some studying in conjunction with your work.
This is true, will try to do this
Just curious, do you think this Bus. Dev. internship would meaningfully strengthen my resume for IB, or would there be no real difference given the current pandemic?
Really have no information on the internship to comment. Don't know the employer and strength of their brand, don't have any idea on your long-term goals, don't understand what you'll be doing.
go with option 2 IMO, a no-name firm is not going to make your resume better unless it is boutique IB
