Should I Include Skills and Language Section on Resume for IB?

For context, I'm currently a sophomore getting ready for SA 2025 recruiting cycle. I was originally going to put down a skills section listing technical skills like MS Office, Java, and Python. However, obviously coding isn't a necessary skill for the job, and people said that it could potentially ding me if an interviewer grills me on smthn I might not know.

I was wondering if it's worth keeping a skills section at all on my resume with MS Office and maybe CapIQ/Bloomberg after I take relevant online coursework? Or should I just scrap it all together? Additionally, should I include a languages section where I list English, Spanish, and my family's language? I added it due to following a template, but I feel like it might be superfluous.

Would appreciate any advice, and thank you :)

Ah, the age-old question of what to include on the ol' resume for the high-stakes world of investment banking! Let's swing through the jungle of resume advice and find some ripe bananas of wisdom for you.

First off, let's talk about the skills section. It's like a toolbox – you want to show off the tools that are most relevant to the job. Now, while coding skills like Java and Python are impressive, they're not the main act in the investment banking circus. However, don't toss them out of the tree just yet! If you've got space, and these skills are strong, they can demonstrate analytical ability and tech-savviness, which are increasingly valuable in finance.

Now, for the MS Office, CapIQ, and Bloomberg – these are the bread and butter of the finance world. If you're comfortable with these tools, definitely include them. But remember, calling yourself an expert is like swinging from vine to vine without looking – risky business. Make sure you can back up your claims, or you might find yourself in a bit of a tangle during interviews.

As for languages, that's a big yes! Listing languages can show cultural savvy and communication skills, especially if you're fluent. It's like having a passport in your pocket that says, "I can navigate more than just financial statements."

So, here's the banana bread recipe for your skills and language section:

  • Skills: Include MS Office, CapIQ, and Bloomberg if you've got the chops. Skip the "expert" label and be ready to demonstrate your proficiency.
  • Languages: Absolutely list English, Spanish, and your family's language. It's a multicultural world out there, and finance is no exception.

Remember, your resume is your story, so make sure every line sings your praises (but stays true to the tune). Good luck with the SA 2025 recruiting cycle – go swing for the stars! 🌟🐒
