Barnard College or USC

Just graduated HS, and submitted my deposit for both schools. Incoming student looking to work in IB. Socal native, not the hugest fan of NY but i’ll tolerate it.

Recruiting wise, is there a big difference between the two? I’d like to actually study business, I got into Marshall but at barnard I’d have to do econ. Also got into UCB Haas but wasn’t a fan of the campus

Ty for the help!!

Went to CC at Columbia and have friends who went to Barnard. Recruiting at Barnard is pretty solid and there seems to be a strong pipeline for women who want to go into IB. I know of multiple people who got offers at top banks. I believe they're able to leverage Columbia career center opportunities and should be able to tap into the alumni network (I know a lot of people who put both Columbia and Barnard on their linked in to that end). I know people at USC as well and it seems they do well for themselves in terms of recruiting although it might be harder to get NYC over LA for IB if that's your goal, though likely not prohibitively so. Overall, I would say both are good for recruiting, although IMO USC might have more of a brand than Barnard.

I would encourage you to consider non-recruiting stuff though. If you don't like NYC then that should weigh heavily because Barnard's campus is pretty small, and so is Columbia's for that matter. Columbia's college experience is very much tied to the city (going out downtown/being off campus) whereas when I've visited friends at USC it seems to have a much more extensive campus culture. Also, Barnard's student body is definitely a certain type of person, usually politically active and liberal. Something to consider if you don't identify as either of those. Lastly, as someone who much preferred business classes over econ classes but still had to do the econ major, if you have the opportunity to take business classes I would take that. The requirements for an econ major at Columbia/Barnard are pretty extensive and I'm pretty sure Barnard econ majors have to do a thesis.

Congrats on the acceptances.

Also went to Columbia. Barnard has strong placement and benefits extensively from Columbia recruiting and the network. Every resume has Barnard College, Columbia University on it and just by nature of being in NYC, you will have strong access to networking and internship opportunities during the school year. I think it’s an easy decision to go to Barnard if you want to do IB in NYC, but if you want to stay on the West Coast, USC makes more sense.

Hey current student at usc and just landed an offer at a bb for 2024. USC is really great for west coast recruiting because there are certain on-campus programs that will help you directly network with banks. There is a program called TIS mentorship which has 30 students that network exclusively with west coast offices like MS, GS, EVR, LAZ, and more. I wasn’t in it but that’s an opportunity for you. You can still get great turnouts without this program.

Also, most people who go to ny from usc are women, especially for JPM. If you work hard, you can definitely land a top offer from USC. Hope this helps and pm me with any questions!

Go to UC Berkeley Haas dude, way better than either or… current student here and working at NY EB as a non div and international. Recruiting for west coast is stupidly easy here too (better than USC) but just my opinion
