Brigham Young - Semi-target?
Hi.
Given the supposedly superior recruiting to IB, consulting etc. at BYU, wouldn't this school actually be a semi-target?
I'm trying to decide btw the University of Washington, University of Illinois and BYU for undergrad business. From a pure recruiting standpoint, which one would give me a better shot at IB and consulting?
Thanks
U of I
U of I is just as good as BYU, maybe even better. I was looking at getting a MAcc from BYU as a backup plan a few years ago. Personally, I think BYU is fantastic, and wish more firms recruited there. The guys I have worked with from there have all been really cool, stable guys. It definitely punches above its rank in US News.
But, most importantly in your decision, are you Mormon? If yes, are you REALLY, REALLY Mormon? BYU is not Notre Dame, where you can still have a great experience as a non-Catholic. You need to be Mormon to fit in there. The school is basically an extension of the LDS church.
There will be no drinking, and no real parties on campus. They take the honor code seriously- if you break it while away from school, it can follow you back. Also, Utah is vastly worse in the winter than U of I.
Unless you are a really committed Mormon, I would think hard before attending. U of I, on the other hand, has great ties to Chicago, and their accounting program is comparable. After NU and UChi, U of I is the primary target for Chicago firms. The location alone could give it an edge- banks don't want to go all the way to Provo for a recruiting event.
I am not Mormon, but share many of their values. BYU appeals to me bc the cost of attendance is basically half that of UIUC, and recruiting seems to be almost as strong. I will have to take up $90.000 +++ in loans at UIUC, which is not enticing to say the least.
$90,000? Are there really no better options in state?
If that's the case, and you think you can live with no drinking/sex/caffeine for 4 years and mandatory dress codes and church service, go for it. Start mastering the art of funneling vodka into water bottles.
A plus is the Mormon girl population...they all look like they were imported from Sweden. Granted, you have to marry them...
Maybe I should clarify; I'm an international student, and due to having limited personal funds, I attend a community college (with the plan of transferring after 1-2 years to lower the overall cost of my degree). Seeing the very low cost of BYU, I figured that this might be an ideal path...You bring up good points though, as I am not religious at all. However, if recruiting is almost as good as at U of I, and the cost is 50% lower, it might be a viable alternative after all.
Have you looked at private universities? The sticker price isn't really what you pay. Get good CC grades, and many will extend merit aid or need-based aid.
If you are just starting CC, why not shoot for McCombs/UVA/UMich or a UC? Berkeley or LA might be worth the cost. I hate the idea of massive debt for undergrad, but those schools are legitimate semi-targets (U of I is at the lower end of the above spectrum for recruiting). After 2 years in a state, you might be able to get some sort of aid or in-state status.
I am not sure if this applies for you, but be prepared if you are not Caucasian...just looking at their site, they are 86% white (and 98.5% Mormon). This is a bastion of diversity relative to the surrounding community.
BYU is definitely becoming more of a target. According to this article, GS hired the same number of people out of BYU as they did out of Wharton in 2010.

Also, head of HR at Citi is Mormon, so that helps.
