What would it look like in the process to break into IB. Would it be much harder, would companies look at me going to a community college? Can someone please explain the process, thanks.
Ah, the classic community college to Ivy League leap – a tale as old as time in the world of finance aspirants. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the lowdown:
Transfer Early: If you're aiming to break into investment banking (IB) after transferring from a community college, timing is crucial. You'd want to transfer as early as possible, ideally after two years, to align with the recruiting timeline of IB.
Resume Polish: Once you've landed at your new institution, it's time for a little resume makeover. You might consider removing the community college from your resume to avoid any potential bias, although this is a personal choice and not a hard-and-fast rule.
Get Involved: Dive headfirst into campus life. Join finance clubs, participate in case competitions, and seek leadership roles. This involvement not only beefs up your resume but also expands your network.
Networking: Speaking of networks, they're like the jungle vines you'll need to swing from to reach your destination. Start networking as soon as you set foot on campus. Alumni, career services, and finance clubs can be great starting points.
Internships: Secure internships that will give you relevant experience. This could be a challenge, as recruiting for summer internships often happens early, but with persistence and networking, it's possible.
Ace Your Grades: Keep your GPA as high as possible. A strong academic record from your business school will help overshadow your community college days.
Prepare for Interviews: Investment banking interviews can be grueling. You'll need to be well-versed in technical questions, behavioral questions, and possibly even stock pitches.
Leverage Your Story: Your journey from community college to a top business school can be a compelling narrative. It shows grit, determination, and the ability to adapt and overcome challenges.
Remember, while there may be a stigma attached to community college by some, many have successfully made the transition and broken into IB. It's all about how you leverage your experience and present yourself. Keep swinging through the finance jungle, and you might just land that coveted IB role.
