Davidson vs. UNC
Hello,
I am a senior in high school planning to major in Econ and I have to make a choice between the two schools. I plan on pursuing IB after college. Objectively, which school will be better for:
-Job recruiting in Charlotte
-Job recruiting in NY
-Business school
Thank you and any input would be much appreciated.
Job recruiting in Charlotte: UNC given the network in Charlotte is just so much bigger (even if this is solely a product of larger class enrollment translating to higher #s working in Charlotte). Vast majority of finance/consulting/real estate firms will have a UNC grad, that is not the case with Davidson.
Job recruiting anywhere else (including NY): UNC by large margin
The above points only apply to business school, cannot really speak for other majors. Given recruiting is huge criteria for business school quality, I guess UNC's is better.
Obviously, these schools have very different cultures that I am sure you are aware of. Pretty easy to pick up on via visiting or asking friends assuming you are from NC.
Is this UNC Chapel Hill? If it is then go with UNC and it isn't even remotely a consideration.

If this is Chapel Hill vs. Davidson, then you better learn how to Hark the Sound. Hands down. (Full disclosure: I went to KF for my MBA).
If UNC-Charlotte vs. Davidson, go to Davidson. Hands down.
Heard good things about the UNC Econ program from alumni in IB. Also, my little brother is looking at UNC Econ and apparently there is a cool program for a “credential in quantitative financial economics”. Google UNC QFE for more info, looks like they place some students into IB just from looking at the website.
Thanks guys, it seems that UNC Chapel Hill is the clear choice as it's better in terms of prestige, resources, and job opportunities.
Davidson is a REALLY great school, so don't sleep on it. If you wanted to pursue certain things outside of Business/ibanking like academia then I would say Davidson might be the better option, but if you are leaning towards business then it's UNC.
And I say UNC for all the reasons other people mention, but also because your GPA/workload is going to matter for recruiting, and Davidson has grade DEflation, while UNC (like most schools) has grade INflation.
Not knocking on the school at all (I'm an alum and loved it there), but the academics are not that tough compared to somewhere like Davidson which is known for being more academically rigorous. I took a lot of liberal arts courses and did not struggle that much to get an A or A-, there was never a curve. Obviously hard science majors and KF is different and there are some brilliant students there as well as tough students and profs.
All things being equal, go to the school that isn't going to arbitrarily depress your GPA because they want to maintain the reputation of being a rigorous academic LAC. Add in all the other opportunities at UNC and it's a clear choice.
That said, if you visit Davidson and absolutely love it, you can do anything you want from there, it just might be harder. Again, it's still a stellar school.
