MBA for healthcare / non-finance opportunities (Haas, NYU, CBS)
Hi guys - I currently live in San Francisco and was fortunate to have been admitted to UC Berkeley Haas and NYU Stern on full rides, as well as a partial scholarship to Columbia Business School. End goal is to work in healthcare / biotech / pharma product management in the Northeast.
Would love to know any thoughts - I feel torn between the money / ability for Haas' name to translate back on the East Coast despite the strong program in healthcare. Would going to a school in New York be better? If so, would it be worth it to take loans + half scholarship at CBS? Happy to provide other information as needed. Thank you.
If you want to actually learn something go to Haas. Every MBA student I met here were insanely hard working and interesting. Professors are also top notch, many of them provided me a lot of opportunities. Columbia on the other hand all I see is already rich people partying and “networking”. This however is literally just based off one person I follow on ig that goes to Columbia for an MBA. This is just my personal opinion so idk if it means much.
Thanks for the response - how has it been for recruitment? Do you feel like you could make it to NYC / East Coast if you wanted to?
Can I ask why you want to go to the east coast? Obviously Haas has more west coast connections and connections to tech, so your networking will help more at NYU and Columbia there.
To get back to family - family is based on the east coast
If you haven't already, check LinkedIn profiles of Haas, NYU, and CBS alumni for product management, specifically at the biopharma companies where you are interested. It would be one more source to supplement your research.
Thanks - definitely been doing that
CBS
Congrats on some great admits and scholarships! You really can't go wrong with any of your options, however I'd suggest CBS.
Haas - Great school but really a powerhouse in tech and west coast placement. It doesn't make sense to go to Haas if you want east coast and healthcare. Your network and placement will be dominated by west coast, even if you do manage to make it to a role in your targeted industry in the northeast, what then? How is the Haas network going to help you in your NE HC role? My guess is you'll find limited use for it.
Stern - Top IB placement school, but its healthcare offering isn't nearly as strong. Stern is really a finance school and not known for its HC offering compared to its NYC peer....
CBS - Opens more doors, probably the best east coast network of the schools you listed. Great on campus HC options, their annual HC conference is great networking. CBS will be the easiest for your career placement as well as options going forward in the NE/industry. The school runs its alumni affairs very well and you'll always have a ton of alumni events to attend in the area. Beyond CBS, the broader Columbia parent opens up a very strong NE alumni base.
Best of luck with your decision!
