Undergraduate: UIUC VS OSU

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently been admitted to UIUC and OSU’s business schools directly. At this point in time, I’d want to work in NYC,Boston,Philadelphia,Washington D.C, Chicago, etc. Big cities preferably on the East Coast once I finish college.
Which of these 2 schools would give me a better opportunity to do so? I’m also considering IU(not Kelley directly) and University of Richmond, if y’all have any advice regarding to these schools it would be helpful and much appreciated.

Thank you for your time!

I can transfer to Kelley and that was what I was planning to do before I’d gotten into these other 2 schools. However, Kelley requires you to get a 3.5 GPA and nothing below a B, in any of your classes. Thus, I’m concerned about the risk factor

Current OSU business student here. While I cannot comment on other schools I can tell you about what OSU currently offers. First things first I'm just going to assume that you're a non honors general business student so that I can give you a broad over view. Essentially what you're looking at in terms of job opportunities is unlimited. Our networking is great, and opportunities are a plenty including internships at JP morgan, Deloitte, Nationwide, Key Bank, and many other consulting, logistics, finance, and technology companies. However there's a major caveat to this...you have to distinguish yourself in a big way from the rest of the students here. Many people within my circle in the business school are honors students classified as "pace setters" by the school. This is exactly where you want to be to unlock the full potential of your opportunities here, and is essential when you're among 7k other business students. In summation if you're going to come to OSU make sure you're ready to work not only hard but smart in order to become a top performer.

Depends if you're an honors student or not. Class sizes for major specific stuff are usually less than 40 people, but your intro classes could be upto a few hundred. However, if you're an honors student you're honors classes are guaranteed to be less than 25.

ThatGuyAttheWaterCooler thanks for your feedback....i am applying for fall 2020 and just got into osu honors - are you able to distinguish between honors vs. non honors experience etc - am trying to decide between osu, iu Kelley and smu cox for undergrad finance - costs are similar at all - have been to osu many times and am huge fan of all of their sports and Columbus also....thanks in advance!

If you aren't willing to risk transfering to Kelley (which isn't really worth it) you should definitely go UIUC. Great job placement in the Chicago area.

OSU student here. DO NOT transfer to Kelley. It is absolutely not worth the risk. I know many OSU students who chose OSU over Kelley because risk of not getting into Kelley IBW is too high compared to the extra 40k you will spend over 4 years than OSU (at least assuming both schools are out of state). Getting into IBW is EXTREMELY political and you’ll be at a huge disadvantage as a transfer because of lack of connections. I considered UIUC, OSU, and Kelley. I chose OSU and have a BB offer. If you want to get into IB fisher futures program will get you there. Even if you don’t get into the program, lots make it to IB. Someone in my class made it to GS IB and wasn’t even in futures. Consulting network is also fantastic if you want to go that route. Mckinsey recruits on campus and takes a couple kids a year, Bain also takes a kid or so every year as well. Not to mention Deloitte takes 20~ kids a year and EY takes 60+ If you want to go Big4. Kelley will give you more opportunity for IB IF you get into IBW but it’s a big risk at a higher cost than OSU. If you don’t get into IBW or the consulting workshop your prospects will be the same if not worse than OSU. UIUC is a great program but for IB specifically VAST majority go to Chicago which is fine if that’s what you want. I loved UIUC when I visited and have a ton of friends there. Great school and great opportunities.

Student life/football at OSU is seriously awesome. Really incredible community that can’t be beat in terms of combination of academics AND fun. Everyone Ik here LOVES the school. Alumni really stick their neck out and we are everywhere being the third biggest school in the country at 62k undergrads. That being said, UIUC is also great and you’ll have great opportunities out of Gies as well, however I’ll argue our finance program is better for the money (ranked 10th overall US news.) if you want accounting Illinois is the place to go, absolute powerhouse. The most common degree among F500 CFOs? That’s right, UIUC accounting undergrad.

Good luck with your decision! Can’t go wrong either way, go bucks!
