Advice for Fixed Income Sales SA in BB Asia

Hi monkeys, I'm going to work as a summer intern in fixed income sales at a BB in Asia. I really wish to do well and get the return offer. I have searched on WSO about advice in general, such as networking with colleagues and double check your work before hand in.

Would you give me more specific advice on Sales intern and Fixed Income? For example, how to behave in front of client (I know my company will probably take interns to client meeting).

Much appreciated!

Did a contact on the desk tell you that you interns meet clients? Because that doesn't seem right at all. Anyway, as a fixed income sales intern you should be well versed in at least basic bond math and valuation. You may also want to research swaps and other credit derivatives. You'll likely spent the majority of time shadowing the sales team and giving them market color.

I got one more question, wilder01. Regarding of shadowing sales team about market, do you have any advice on that? For example, are there any skills of picking the right news or any resources for fixed income that I should start to read now? I'm not coming from Finance background so I really hope to prepare early and enough for the SA.

Bond Math, Interest Rate Swaps and Other Derivatives, and Hull's classic will give you good coverage from a reading standpoint. Google around for primers on FI from banks so you can get familiar with the language in a more practical sense (what does it mean for the belly to be getting richer, etc.)
