lehman brothers s&T- best desk

i recently accepted an analyst position with lehman s&T starting in summer 07

i want to go into some sort of credit trading but was wondering what peoples opinions are about what the best desks are at lehman

thanks for the help

really? lehman wasn't even recruiting for S&T this year so I'm a bit surprised to hear that.

single-name CDS and HY should be run on the same desk at pretty much every bank. I'm sure Lehman is fine for those desks. What's your background?

yeah they recruited very lightly...i was lucky

youre right, lehman def merged their cash and cds desks so hopefully i can get on there

go to top 5 ugrad business school

wats your background

I go to a top 5 school, lehman didn't even recruit for s&t at my school

I know quite a bit about credit if you have any questions

lehman has moved to a dual internship program...they have two 8 week programs for summer interns therefore they have twice as many as other banks

they try to fill close to 100% of their full time class from these interns

i don't know if anyone has any info since this is a trading forum, but could anyone shed some color on the lehman desks i should look at if i want to do sales rather than trading?

i have an interest in credit derivs, but I also am looking for the desks with the best earning potential.

i did intern at lehman over the summer, but for obvious reasons didn't want to ask anyone about what kind of bonuses they get.

i've said it once, i've said it a thousand times. go where you like the ppl and you think you'll get experience. you can make a lot in most sales roles. some more than others, ok. but if you're good in rates or fx or credit derivs you can still make a good (great!) living. your focus is entirerly misdirected.

thanks for the input jimbo, from seeing all the knowledge you have displayed, i relly respect your opinion.

although i didn't mention it, i know liking the ppl and the ppl liking you are the biggest factor. but at lehman, i had a chance to visit several desks and really liked the majority of the ppl and they seemed to like me. so i am assuming that a good proportion of the desks will have ppl that i like.

that said, i feel that it's hard to tell whether or not a certain desk will provide good experience as so many factors come into play. my assumption is that if i get onto a desk that i get along well with and who like me, they will be more willing to help me.

so from my experience over the summer, i came to the conclusion that there will be several desks that will most likely have great ppl i would like to work with. if this is the case and i had several desks i am interested in, i would probably choose the one that has the most potential.

i know that it may be superficial, but one of the main reasons i considered working for a bank was the potential to make a ton of money. working over the summer, though, reinforced my interest because i loved working there and i really liked the people. however, that doesn't take away from the fact that i still want to make a lot of money.

i am really interested to hear more of your views, jimbo.

ok, if it's a tiebreaker type scenario i understand. first evaluate what sort of person you are. do you like fast paced, high volume, little time to think, on to the next trade type of a pace? or do you like slower, more intricate, quote a lot and trade infrequently type of pace?

The first is more akin to fx spot sales and treasury sales. CDO sales, and a structured rates/structured notes sales are like the latter. commodity, corporate bonds, mbs and rates sales are somewhere in between.

The hottest areas are still credit derivs and increasingly structured rates. Commodities too. If you are concerned about longevity I'd avoid fx spot and treasury and focus on the more structured stuff. better ops to make a niche for yourself and make a goodly amount in a less commoditized product.
