Quitting S&T BB and taking a break?

I am a S&T professional with 6 years of experience. I joined a BB a year ago and have had an awful experience. Mental health impact is moderate to high (my therapist is prescribing me a small dose of antidepressants, for reference)

Long story short, I am absolutely drained. Vacations don’t do it. When I return to work I feel horrible again in a matter of days. I dread work, have a baseline level of anxiety every day/night.

The advice I have received is to coast and start recruiting for other jobs (and I have) but I haven’t landed a role yet. This seems like a double edged sword, because I am getting desperate to leave and may take the wrong job. This job would be my first “short” 1y stint.

Reality is that I am so exhausted that I think jumping directly to another job might not make sense. I also think that recruiting while I am desperate to leave this job is worse than recruiting jobless. 

I feel like I need to rest but I have read comments saying that it’s basically “catastrophic” to leave a job without another lined up. Don’t know what to believe.

Any advice?

 

The same happened to me. Ended avoiding some of the team members, the seniors. Waking up dreading the day to come for 6 months including weekends, because there were no weekend in that team. Resigned sending an email to HR, cc'ing the MD. Good riddance.

Market was hot so took some time off (one MD I interviewed with asked me why wasn't I taking a full year off). Still managed to get multiple offers.

I guess you are right, it very difficult to prep or be in the right frame of mind in the situation you are in.

The gap on the CV is fine I guess. You can either be honest (which is what I do, no fit whatsoever) or make up something (family stuff, emergencies ect). It's not the end of the world.

 

I would try to get a full week off and decide what's best for you, not your career. Make a plan. If you decided to leave what would that look like? How is your financial situation? Do you have an emergency savings that can compensate your lifestyle for 3-6 months if it takes longer than expected to land another role if you were to leave w/o another offer? At the end of the day, you having to get prescribed antidepressant because of your job is tough. Building a career is very important, but if you're not present and at least find it somewhat enjoyable than what's the point? 

Anyone can bounce back. Sometimes you need to take a step back and reset to see the bigger picture and find out what exactly you want. You might come back after sometime off feeling money and ready to roll. You got a story, you can spin it anyway to land back on your feet, plus 6 years of experience. 

 

I would power through the next 3 months so you can keep the the sign on and would only have 1 month left on lease agreement. Your vacation/sick time probably reset for the new fiscal year so try and plot sometime around your calendar so you can take some longer weekends and reset. One day/one week at a time to get through the next 90 days or so.  In the meantime, this could be a good time to hit the network or build the network internally/externally to plan your move. This can set you up to be in a good spot plus wont take a hit financially. 

 

 

Reading this is like I could have written it myself, except only 3 years of experience rather than 6. I have been in my current role for 1.5 years and also feel like I was misled on what the team / culture was like. I’m at the point where I want to try get some kind of medical leave for my mental health but I don’t know how to go about it. 

 

To be fair I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a problematic industry in general, many people really enjoy the job. Even for myself I enjoyed the first year or so in the industry before I moved and at the moment I don’t want to leave S&T in general, just got unlucky with ending up on a toxic desk. Saying that, I know a few people who left the industry who felt similarly to this thread. The job is very intense and fast-paced and you will work closely with a small number of people for 10-13 hours a day depending on your seat with basically 0 breaks. If the environment you are in is toxic and not supportive then it’s going to be very difficult rather than somewhere you can thrive.
