I wanted to reach out to my contacts and ask if I could come in some days and shadow on their desks, but was worried if this would come off weird (I go to college in NYC). What can I do (beyond staying updated on the markets) to make sure that I do well in the summer?

polishing your excel/vba skills would be a plus

The best thing you can do at this point is research different desks (products) and learn about what they do. By your start date, if someone named a desk you should be able to discuss what that desk does (ex product suite traded, typical clients, etc.). This will give you a leg up during placement day.
