2nd Year Investment Banking MBA Associate looking to pivot to VC
Hoping to make to make the pivot to VC, but seems like it's a very uncommon path for MBA investment banking associates to go this route...is this something funds would be open to? I'm not expecting to join some huge fund, but very curious if the VC path is a viable option as it does sound quite interesting to me. Any and all insights would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!
Based on the WSO threads, pivoting from investment banking to venture capital (VC) as an MBA associate is indeed less common but not impossible. Here are some insights and steps you might consider:
Leverage Your Network: Utilize your connections from both your MBA program and your time in investment banking. Networking is crucial in the VC world. Attend industry meetups, VC panels, and startup events to build relationships with VC professionals.
Highlight Relevant Skills: Emphasize the skills you've acquired in investment banking that are transferable to VC, such as financial modeling, due diligence, market analysis, and deal execution. Your ability to assess companies and understand financials will be valuable in venture capital.
Gain Exposure to Startups: If possible, get involved with startup ecosystems. This could be through consulting projects, internships, or even investing personally if feasible. Understanding the lifecycle and challenges of startups will be crucial in a VC role.
Target Smaller Funds: As you mentioned, aiming for smaller or mid-sized VC funds can be a strategic move. These funds might be more open to diverse backgrounds and value your banking experience highly.
Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the VC industry. Follow major trends, understand different funding stages, and know key players in the sector. This knowledge will not only help in interviews but also in performing effectively once you make the transition.
While the path is not the most trodden, with the right strategy and persistence, moving into VC can definitely be within reach.

Certainly possible if you're in a tech group and/or a top tier mba. If not, it may need more effort but never impossible
Much appreciated! Think I might have a shot then cus I fall into that bucket...do you have any insight on what the recruiting/interview process looks like? i.e. structure, types of questions asked in interviews, etc. Thanks in advance!!
