Networking for Growth Equity?

I’m looking to break into growth equity - I have a somewhat atypical background. I worked in IB (M&A) for almost a year and then left to do strategic finance. I’m somewhat a relationship oriented person and much more of a self-starter than what is allowed in corporate finance, so I actually am very interested in growth equity given the opportunity to partner closely with founders and source (I see sourcing as a key skill I’d like to exercise!)

I feel as though given my atypical background I’m not getting as many looks from headhunters. The inbounds are pretty slow/infrequent compared to what I’ve seen, but I could just be anxious. Therefore, I’m curious if it’s common to network when recruiting for growth equity? I know sometimes the processes can be highly structured/people are busy so didn’t want to ruin my chances just by being irritating.

Also, as a side, are there any firms that really emphasize sourcing/have a good program for becoming strong at that?

Happy to PM anyone if it’s easier!
