Technical Knowledge / Analysis in VC Roles?

Hi I'm currently a sophomore in university interested in going into VC ideally after graduation or hopefully can land a tech IB role and then get into VC afterwards. Wondering how much technical analysis / financial modeling there could be in a potential VC entry level role, or is it relatively minimal compared to buyout?
What resources could I reference if I wanted to learn more about VC in general and get up to speed on both the jargon and any sort of valuation / analytical aspects of the job?

Hey there, future VC star! You're asking some great questions. In terms of technical analysis and financial modeling in VC roles, it can vary quite a bit. For example, if you're dealing with a seed round (pre-revenue, generally proof of concept stage), the analysis is more focused on the market, eventual product, and especially management. As you move to Series C and beyond, this is where modeling can be of use. Analysis is more focused around exits, cap tables at various rounds, dilution, IRR, etc.

In terms of resources to learn more about VC, the WSO Academy has a wealth of information. You can find lessons taught by experienced private equity pros and bulge bracket investment bankers, including financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, Comps, and Excel Modeling. You can also check out the WSO Company Database and Industry Reports for more insights.

Remember, the financial modeling aspect of VC is really quite simple and this knowledge can be easily transferred. I wouldn't stress financial skills too much (especially for early stage), although it is important for an analyst to construct financial models from scratch.

Keep in mind, there's no "formula" or "checklist" for due diligence (like in accounting or law). Good VC firms develop individualized methodologies for a prospective deal. Once you've done intense research on one sector, you'll be able to contribute a lot more.

Hope this helps! Keep swinging from those branches, and you'll reach your goals in no time.
