Advice on what to do before starting as a first year?

Hello fellow primates,

Long time reader, first time poster. This site has helped me so much over the past year or two that I wanted to take the plunge and sign up now that I have secured an offer and know what I'm doing next year.

I finally figured out my housing in NYC so I've come to the question of what I'm going to do this summer for the month or so I have before I have to report for training.

Basically I just wanted to see if anyone had heard of any great advice or stories for things to do before starting training and then the real thing.

Europe? Vegas? A month spent banking sleep at home? Let me know your best experiences/ideas.

Spend a week with the family (if you don't go to school near them) and then do a cheap but awesome vacation for 2-3 weeks. I have friends who are doing a backpacking trip from Spain for the running of the bulls (in early july) to Croatia. Another buddy of mine is doing a SE Asia trip with a focus on surfing in Indonesia. Just make it count, you're not gonna have so much time off all at once again for a while right?

I did a few months in Central and South America and had the time of my life. For a short 4-5 week jaunt I'd recommend seeing Guatemala and Nicaragua...maybe Honduras....cheap as hell, you'll meet plenty of cool people at the hostels, and you'll get to see some great ruins. Although I ran into my fair share of "retired" bankers and traders out there, I also met a ton of backpackers from different countries who were either on their gap year after college or just on vacation before starting in the real world. It was cultural exchange by day and full on partying at night. Feel free to PM me for more specifics.
