Answering Open Ended Technical Questions

What is the best way to answer an open ended technical question? How much detail and nitty gritty should you go into?

My guess is not to go too crazy, but show that you have familiarity with the topic and make reference to some well-known models/concepts about it.

An example might be, "explain equities and their market to me". If someone is well instructed in finance they could probably go on a whole drawn out explanation, but is that what interviewers are looking for?

I recommend keeping you answer as concise as possible. Give just enough to show you have some understanding of the subject. Let the interviewer dig deeper if she so chooses. The interviewer may be testing you to see if you are a know-it-all, and you do not want your answer to open doors that you are not able to walk through.
