Best Debt, Equity, & Structured Finance Groups in NYC
Considering a pivot from Analyst with an Investment Sales group to a D/E shop. Any thoughts on the best Institutional groups in NYC? I believe the top 2 are Aaron Appel's team at Walker & Dunlop and Newmark's Stolly and Roecshlaub.
Well Dusty and Jordy are gonna have openings
The other group certainly isn't better from a morale standpoint, and I'd rather work the fontainebleau refi than a bunch of agency stuff.
That said - not a great time to be looking around.
what makes you say this? must’ve missed something. are their analysts leaving?
....everyone is leaving. VP Steve Sperandio is at B6. And a slew or more junior people are leaving this toxic place. But whatever it's broekrage....and really good pay. suck it up, they are bros
Hiring freeze on that desk
CBRE's group is also good and growing. Eastdil still does a good bit of business. The CW team has improved due to Spies and Harmon passing them deals. Also the two you mentioned kill it, but aren't known to be very pleasant places to work.
Also not to sure about the whole HFF JLL dynamic, but i'm sure that team does well too. I'll let others opine on the specifics of how that has been working post merger w/ Appel and company taking off.
There's a lot of shooters in NYC that kill it but move in silence:
IronHound Management https://ironhound.com/ Best CMBS RX shop hands down. Also does D/E placement. Run by "Large Loan Verrone"
ParkBridge Financial http://www.parkbridgefinancial.com/ (ex BAML guys - a lot of CMBS securitization/trust advisory to lenders and bond buyers but can also do vanilla placement for borrowers)
Lotus Capital Partners http://lotus-cp.com/ Came out of nowhere and starting doing sexy off-the-run stuff (i.e. London condo inventory loan with apollo for $237MM/$400MM mandarin construction loan in Boca/Sold mezz to Koreans for Natixis on deal in NJ, etc.)
Paramount Advisory https://www.paramountadv.com/ (Does a lot of debt syndication advisory. Sells mezz to Asian investor-lenders that are "off market" or groups that aren't formally lenders with an originations desk but will trade mezz/b-pieces).
Talmage LLC http://sharpthink.com/clients/talmage/advisory.html Technically an nvestment manager but also does advisory (placement, restructuring, loan sales, etc.) and servicing
Don't sleep on these types of shops!!!!
this is a sweet list, any idea what pay at these shops might look like? do they even run with analysts or is it just a principal-only setup?
Lotus is in line with market, team of maybe 8 guys. The analysts and associates travel to many of their financing deal locations, Faisal is super smart, very knowledgeable and consciencous
they are hiring an analyst/associate...someone to eventually relocate to their miami office. Sounds like a sweet deal
.
Traynor and Millon at CBRE are killing it too. Eastdil always strong as well.
I also know some guys from Studley (Jeff Baker and Graham Hobbs) went over to PJT to build a property level capital advisory vertical. Would be curious to hear how they're doing. Haven't hear a peep since they went over but would imagine their funds advisory stuff flows down to asset-level mandates.
I remember seeing an analyst posting for PJT a week or so ago so I would assume they have some deal flow if they were looking for support staff. Obviously discount this info due to corona
Tepedinos team (former HFF) at JLL. They might only be Debt though, unsure.
Whats the reputation of Ackman Ziff?
They do some sweet deals. Not sure on actual culture or anything about working there, though.
I know Walker Dunlop has been trying to buy Ackman Ziff for a while now... they wouldn’t be doing that if they weren’t a worthwhile company. Don’t know much about the types of deals they do but I’ve heard their CEO speak in webinars, seems knowledgeable and cool. Nice hair too.
Haha Simon is a great guy and I've always thought Ackman Ziff was a sweet company. Have no idea how they hire analysts or originators though, but they work on some cool deals.
Anyone ever work with or work for Mission Capital Advisors?
They just got purchased by Marcus & Millichap. I did one deal with them, but they were a pain to work with
Any tips and advice how to break into one of these teams? I've been trying to network with people on LinkedIn but having no real traction yet? Also is there a way I can find out the people in each team?
Another name to add - Pete Nicoletti, the former head of JLL’s real estate investment banking group, recently moved to Colliers. Looks like they have some openings based on LinkedIn postings.
Anyone have any color on the rep of HFF / JLL's NYC D/E groups?
They’re ok. They’re certainly no Dustin/Jordy or Traynor/Millon, but the old HFF guys have decent deal flow.
Why the MS? Do you disagree with this statement?
Anyone have any color on Eyzenberg & Co and/or B6's Debt team?
Unsure about Eyzenberg but B6 doesn’t put a lot of value into Analysts like more institutional groups.
What about for associates/originators?
