Breaking into fundamental single-name equity L/S (Tiger, Coatue, D1, Whale Rock, etc)

Do top fundamental equity L/S funds (like those in title) recruit almost purely out of MF PE associate programs, or would IBD analysts be able to get interviews?

For context, I'm an undergrad interning at a strong BB/EB in a group with solid PE placement. If my ultimate goal is to work at one of the funds mentioned (or another with similar strategy and performance) is my best shot to go through PE recruiting, finish banking and then start recruiting for HF from PE? Most LinkedIn profiles that I have seen show that background, but I have wondered if that is due purely to exclusivity or in part because of how early PE recruiting is compared with the staggered nature of HF recruiting. I'm not averse to doing a third year in banking (recruiting for PE after year 1) if that would open opportunities to recruit for HF.

Would really appreciate any insight here.

Know a few guys at two of the funds in your title and it's a mix of paths from what I've seen on linkedin - although the ones I know did IB / PE. A lot of other people I have worked with at other HFs have also had a mix background. No set path to any seat. Seeing that you're only an intern, why don't you try to network with a couple of guys from these funds and try to get their opinion? They will be happy to speak to you if you know what they do and have a strong background, which you seem like you might because you're interning at a top bank
