Breaking Into Industry?

If you're in an industry banking group, how realistic is it to eventually want to do management in that field? For example, if you did Tech, do you have the opportunity (maybe post-MBA) to be project manager for a tech firm? If you did Healthcare, then Healthcare management, Media to Entertainment, etc.?

I know most people want to do PE/Hedge Fund, since it uses the finance skills more. But if someone wants to do strategy/management, what appeal does a 2-year banking job have? Also, I know compensation wise it won't start off as good as banking, but assuming you're intelligence and competent, will your management path be as good as those who did management or consulting before?

Your 2 yr analyst stint will

Your 2 yr analyst stint will be like doing a clerkship (for federal court, court of appeals, supreme court) before practicing law.... very talked about, even when you're 50.

Very easy to make the switch

Very easy to make the switch to industry - quite a few do it, although they typically go into Corp Dev. The hard part about coming from finance, is that you lack the operational skill set. Sure you know how their business runs and the industry works, but typically you'll know little to nothing about running a company. After your 2 year stint, it should be fairly easy for your MD to put in a few calls to clients to get you into their mgmt training program. Although not sure what the progression is typically like from there.
