Can I turn this situation into FT?
I'm graduating undergrad in May 2017 from a non-target school, I've been interning the past several summers at a research focused, concentrated L/S firm in NYC. I'd ideally like to skip banking and go straight to the buyside.
For firm specific reasons there isn't a FT spot open at the firm I've been interning at, so I've been networking a lot and sending my write-ups around to other funds.
I wrote up a credit short over the summer and got it into the hands of a distressed/event-driven PM in NYC. He seemed to take a liking to me and we spent the past month talking back and forth about the pitch, tying up loose ends and giving me career advice in general. Anyway, he told me recently that he put the short on. Not a big position, but primarily a vote of confidence more than anything. He's having me attend the company's upcoming analyst day as an "intern" for his firm.
He told me his firm won't hire me FT since they prefer people with years of experience and don't have the resources to train, but has been making an effort to get my work and resume in front of other funds.
My question is, do you think I could be able to flip this into a FT position at his firm anyway? I get the preference to hire analysts with more experience, but it seems like this PM has taken a liking to me and he and I get along. Plus he seems sincere about wanting to help me rather than just using me for free work. Seems like it would make more sense to me that way.
Thoughts?
