Can Wall Street afford rewarding employees with down time?
Everyone on the face of this Earth suffers from the ever menacing 'afternoon slump'. According to science, this thing is very real, and is explained by the human body's circadian rhythm and a drop in blood sugar levels. In normal terms, its the thing where you feel like doing nothing but eating a candy bar or taking a nap.
Other industries, especially the tech industry, have embraced this with open arms, introducing creative ways to tackle this head on, ranging from 10 minute dance parties every thursday, to things like trivia hour to keep employees from drifting away into nothingness.
There is however a natural barrier to these when it comes to Wall Street work culture, where any minute wasted can be a loss worth millions of dollars. Plus the markets, which don't close before 4, won't allow any break time before that.
This begs the question, that even with 80-100 hour weeks, despite deserving afternoon slump remedies, will Wall Street ever be able to introduce something like that? Or is it just a matter of time before it catches up to new work cultures and starts providing sleep pods and fitness hours?
